Look at this video. I live in Carlisle, 15-20 minutes from Des Moines, but my mom lives right by the Des Moines River. Her house is fine so far, and she is fortunate enough to live on a high hill. Lance and Carol (the ones with the preemie baby in the hospital) also live right by the river. I drove by where some of the flooding has had it’s worse damage, and I am stunned because where play fields and buildings once were, they are now covered. I will try to get some pictures of some damage tomorrow, but fortunately (even though there is flooding around Carlisle) our house isn’t affected yet. This has been the worst flooding since 1993, and I am not sure how the flooding numbers compare to now, but I bet they’re close.
With that last video, they are at Union Park which is next door to my mom’s house, and that Marina is right next to my mom’s house as well. The water level is REALLY high.
June 14, 2008 at 10:45 pm #495819June 14, 2008 at 10:55 pm #713934that sucks i hope her house doesnt get messed up. My stepfaters family lived in Des Moins back in 93 durring the last bad flood . Their house was totaled , to top things of they found a casket in their livingroom or what was left of it
June 14, 2008 at 10:58 pm #713935Yikes, I hope things turn out okay!
June 14, 2008 at 11:31 pm #713936Yeah, it’s a real mess out there. About 10 years ago was a 500 year flood, and now this is at least 12ft higher? 1000 year flood? Just craziness! Parts of Central NY had some crazy flooding the last couple of years too in areas that haven’t flooded in recorded memory and not on a flood plain. Hopefully things dry out a bit there (and send it to the southeast where it’s needed!).
My aunt, uncle, and cousins live in Rolf. They have minor flooding, but nothing that is damaging too their crops (they grow soybean and corn). Just some muddy fields with some large puddles. They don’t live close to the rivers though.

June 16, 2008 at 6:30 am #713943😯 That’s freaky. I hope the damage is covered.
June 17, 2008 at 1:49 am #713944So many people don’t carry flood insurance and your regular house insurance doesn’t cover flooding from natural causes. That is one of the reasons I hope the bill before congress right now for a Federal Catastrophe (I am not sure that is how you spell it) Insurance Plan passes. In the past some of the mid-west and central states were against it because they said they would be paying for earthquakes in CA and hurricanes in FL but lately the tornados in OK, IA, KS, Mo and a few other states are just as bad if not worse and will be just as expensive to recover from. Also hurricanes hit other states than FL for example look at LA.
When I was buying my house in FL my real estate lady asked the builder if this was a flood plain and they said NO. Less than a year later we got the backlash from Hurricane Irene and gor 27″ of rain in less than 24 hrs. but that is very unusual but can happen. The next morning when I looked out water was less than 5′ from my garage door. Fortunately the driveway sloops away from the house. In the back there is usually 100 yards betwen my house and the lake and the lake was less than 25′ from my back sliding door. As soon as I could I purchased flood insurance. It is very cheap and can be a lifesaver if you ever need it. It is under a Federal Flood Insurance Plan and today we need one for catastrophes because they are happening all over the US.
End of lecture
June 17, 2008 at 2:49 am #713945😯 OMG! I was watching the news and saw the images!
I’m so sorry for everyone involved in this flood.
I hope the river stops rising soon and everything gets back to normal. The damage so far is devastating!June 17, 2008 at 2:56 am #713946Wow arjeb, I didn’t even know they are hoping to pass that! I certainly hope they do because there aren’t many people with flood insurance here.
