And Nam’s info above is why I’ve always avoided goldfish. πŸ˜•

When I was in kindergarten, I had two big goldfish (well, big for my age! They were probably around 4 or 5″ each). They were so neat… and they loved being pet 😯 If you stuck your finger in the tank they’d come up and either rub their bodies on it or wait for you to rub on them.
When we moved, we gave them to a friend who had a goldfish too…
But really, I stay away from goldfish because… they’re just not for me. They’re kind of “bland” (or most of them are). I like the weird fish πŸ™‚ I currently have several fish, but my favorites are the Spotted African Leaf Fish (or maybe he’s a Leopard Bush Fish… I really don’t know anymore x___x He was sold to me as African but who knows) and my Dojo Loach.

Oh no! How awful! Well…honestly what else could you have done. I don’t think it was the wrong choice, but maybe next time…..flush twice πŸ™

Aww man, I’m so sorry about the fish! Bad kitty! 😑 And poor Donovan having to see the fish like that. πŸ™

Goldfish are a real chore to take care of though. Everything Jen said up there is pretty much it. I had an oranda for about 3 years. He grew quickly, and I had him in a 30 gallon tank before he got real sick with swim bladder disease. He was probably about 5 inches in length. I treated him, did water and filter changes, checked PH level… all that crap, but it just kept coming back. Those kind of fancy goldfish get problems like that real easily. This was my first fish, and really is not the kind to get for a beginner. I just wanted him, cause he was pretty and had a fluffy head. I still feel bad about not being able to save him. πŸ™ After him, I vowed to never do aquariums again.

Oh no!! I’m so sorry about the little goldfish πŸ™ For some reason, neither of my cats have really even noticed that Finnley is around. Sometimes Callie will lay right next to the tank but it’s like she doesn’t even see him O-o

As for having to Euthanize a fish, I have never had to do it but read about it before getting Finnley, from what I can gather from online forums is that using clove oil in the water is one of the more humane ways to have to euthanize a fish. Of course in your situation you couldn’t exactly wait to find clove oil, but I hear flushing is not a good way to do it since they can stay alive for quite a while.

Baking soda too. I recall a guy who I worked with that was a fish vet. He said you could anesthetize them with baking soda, and you could also use it for euthanasia.
