Here’s my ‘latest’. It is a drake Bufflehead duck painted in arylics, 9″ x 12″.
It was painted for the Delaware waterfowl stamp competition. I regret to say that it didn’t even make the first round of judging, so it didn’t place. Will need to try harder next year!
Special thanks to my friend Damian, who very kindly photographed and gave me a photo of this duck for me to work from. He was my hero since I cannot get bufflehead photos of my own where I live. Thank you Damian!

Damian’s photos are here. They are incredible! http://www.flickr.com/photos/ddavalos

Holy Crappoli and I don’t mean your painting!! You know Jennifer, I am going to bet that this painting wasn’t chosen because it is UNREAL! WOW, that water is amazzzzing – both above beaded on the wings and below — the duck itself looks incredible……..and maybe they thought they could purchase it from you for a better deal, if it DIDN’T get selected LOL Devious judges! haha Wow, your talent is beyond description. Maybe you leave them stumped I don’t know!

Absolutely incredible, Jennifer! I just love this series! I know you’ll land one of these waterfowl stamp competitions soon enough. Your work is too phenomenal not to place first!

I’m loving these as well. The last few look so real. I think it’s the way you painted the water that does it for me mostly, but the birds are just as realistic. Beautiful!

Yes, I sell them… or try to at least. 🙂

I don’t get why that last one didn’t even make it past the first round. I know there are some incredibly talented artists that compete for these stamps, but that one was amazing. Do you have any indication about what would have made it do better? After seeing what did better than one of your earlier ones, I honestly have no idea what should do well and what doesn’t, since I thought more than one was clearly inferior to yours. Maybe more action? Maybe a particular species? It just doesn’t make sense.

It’s 100% up to the whim of the judges.
Sometimes action does well, sometimes peaceful.
Sometimes two ducks do well, sometimes one.
Sometimes bright colors do well, sometimes subdued ones.
Sometimes very photographic paintings do well, sometimes painterly ones do.
Sometimes lots of detail does well, sometimes simplistic does.

It’s a total crapshoot, which makes it totally frustrating!

Here is another one that I am now allowed to post! This was for Michigan’s Duck stamp contest. Again I did not place, but at least I had a lot of fun!

It’s still acrylic, 12″ x 9″ this time. Hooded Mergansers.

I am currently working on two more.. one for the Federal, which I am not allowed to show until judging in October (augh!) and one for Oklahoma.

I just love this one! The water is amazing and I really love the male ducks reflection in the water. The winners must be something amazing if you didn’t win.
