So, things have gone from worse to worser (is that even a word?) I’m in need of motivational/empowerment music somewhere along the lines of Kelly Clarkson’s “Stronger”. Any suggestions out there? What do you listen to that helps drive out feelings of hoplessness and doubt and makes you say “I CAN DO THIS!”…

Male Hearth....one day🤞Dream on.September 10, 2013 at 11:43 pm #902504Some of the songs that came to mind are already mentioned. I can mention one, it’s for you TDM to remember–Carole King’s ‘You’ve Got A Friend.’ We’re all thinking about you and sending positive, strong thoughts your way. Yes, this too will pass.
September 10, 2013 at 11:50 pm #902507I’ll second Branzy’s rec for Bon Jovi’s “It’s My Life”, and note that it’s best played loud.
Then again, most music is best that way as far as I’m concerned. 🙂
Other possibles in rotation on my iPhone:
P!nk “F**ckin’ Perfect” (language or not, every woman in the world should memorize this one)
Duran Duran “Still Breathing” (off their Astronaut album from a few years back)
Nickleback’s “If Today Was Your Last Day”
Phil Collins “I Don’t Care Anymore”The others I use aren’t terribly inspiring–rock & metal that are just plain angry. Or dance music that I’ve found simply turns the day around if I’m willing to throw myself into it wholeheartedly.
Also something to consider: for some people, or at some times, anxiety and emotional responses aren’t calmed by lyrics or vocals. If I’m really in bad shape, or if I need to somehow gather my typically scattered wits and focus, all the powerful anthems get pushed aside. My primary go to at that point is, oddly enough, Mozart’s “Requiem” mass. I’m not a religious person, but for various reasons–including the theme of redemption–that piece calls to me. The fact that it’s sung in Latin, rather than English, frees my mind from the anger and stress that are sometimes reinforced by the contemporary stuff. I’ve used it so often for this purpose that now my body tends to relax before the end of the opening song. Yay for Pavlovian responses! LOL
Lately, I’ve also purchased three albums via iTunes by a local artist/composer named Shaun Paul. He’s a cellist, and his instrumentals are simply beautiful.
Anyway, it may be worthwhile to find a piece that speaks to you in the right way, and start teaching yourself to retreat to it in that way. Meanwhile, *hugs*. Just grit your teeth & keep hanging on. It won’t be forever.
September 11, 2013 at 12:49 am #902514I’m not much of a music-with-lyrics person, and most of that for me falls in the Gospel/Christian bucket, but if you’re not averse, I really find ‘Move’ by MercyMe a piece that gives me energy and ‘fight’ against crap going on.
Hang in there!!
September 11, 2013 at 2:33 am #902523Thanks for the suggestions guys. Keep ’em coming… I do love Vivaldi’s Four Seasons and “Fanfare for the Common Man” by… *rats it just slipped my mind* I want to say Aaron Copeland. Hymns or religious music are also welcome. One of my favorites is “A Mighty Fortress is Our God”.
… yes, I do have rather eclectic tastes. Please keep ’em coming! Thanks muchly, tdm

September 11, 2013 at 3:23 am #902528My favourite ‘fight’ music of this nature is probably ‘So What’ by Pink – it’s got just the right blend of defiance and snark, so I love it. 🙂 I really hope things get better for you soon! Hugs!!

Excellent!
September 11, 2013 at 6:15 am #902535My immediate thought is, “Goodbye Earl” by the Dixie Chicks. Which may be a bit stabbier and less erm, respectable than what you’re thinking of…
“Uprising” by Muse,
and
“Seven Nation Army” by The White Stripes
are plenty good as fight music but aren’t really support music.Personally I like “Shake it out” by Florence and the Machine.
Wish I could think of more for you. I like everyone else’s recommendations.
September 11, 2013 at 8:09 am #902536Katy Perry – Roar
September 11, 2013 at 8:34 am #902537I like the soul singers like Aretha Franklin and her song RESPECT or Whitney Houston songs. When I want to relax and calm down I like Classical and Enya songs. I learned to play Watermark by her on the piano and like to play that at night if I am anxious to go to sleep.
Looking for rainbow or pink & teal grab bags!
