        I had it today!!

My bicycle fell apart on me while I was riding it three weeks ago–I had faceplanted on the concrete before I even knew what was happening. I thought I really bruised my elbow, but a couple days later the swelling wasn’t going down so I had it xrayed at an urgent care. It was broken! I sheared the tip of my elbow off when it hit the concrete and the fragment was floating in there. So, I was referred to an orthopedic surgeon. He took a look and it wasn’t just broken–I tore my tricep tendon completely off 😮 A 2-cm gap where it was and where it was supposed to be attached, which required surgery asap.

I’ve had the consultation, MRI, and surgery to repair the elbow in 6 days! Talk about a blitzkrieg. I’ve never had surgery before, I was really, really scared. The worst part is, my mom’s in Belgium and couldn’t be there with me. I wanted my mama. (Especially when they put the needle in, I can’t handle needles.) My sister was able to pick me up though, at least, and a couple friends managed to get a day off work so I won’t be alone for the next few days.

I’ve been home from surgery about an hour now. My arm’s really in a lot of pain and I can’t take any more painkillers for a few hours. So I’m distracting myself typing the story out one-handed to you guys 🙂 At least the healing has begun though.

Surgery is a trip. It sucked so much, but the doctor and nurses were so nice. Especially the nurses. I was the only one in pre-op without someone to keep me company, so I got to chat with them a bit and they really helped me stay calm while I was waiting. Three of them ended up helping me manage the needle for the IV as well. I don’t resist and freak out, but I do get very affected by needles and have to concentrate to not panic. They gave me oxygen, and rubbing alcohol to smell, and a cool compress and talked me through it. What sweethearts–I get embarrassed that I react so strongly to being stuck 😳

All in all I’m just so glad it’s over. Has anyone here had elbow/arm surgery? Or any really. How’d you do? Any good stories? I was hoping I’d at least be entertaining when I was coming out of anaesthesia, but all I got was gnarly hot flashes. That was new–I’m only 25!!

Awww. Sorry you had to go through that! The only surgery I’ve ever had was c-sections and by then I was ready to get it over with!
          I hope you heal quickly!

I’m glad your surgery went well. I’ve had several surgeries but I only remember one. I was born with an amengemoa (sp?) on my lip and they had to do several surgeries to stop the blood from pooling in the lip when I was a baby. I had the final surgery to have it removed when I was in 3rd grade…I think. I remember that the Thundercats were airing the Lino-o trials for the first time and I slept through the Cheetara episode…I was so mad.

I was on a liquid diet for about 3 weeks because my lip was so swollen I couldn’t open my jaw. I was nice having people weight on me hand and foot. But it basically sucked overall. Hope that helps to lighten your day a bit. You are not alone. 😀

Glad it’s over with. Now just focus on healing, don’t rush it.

Last invasive surgery I had was to have my tonsils removed when I was 7. 😀

Only surgery I ever had was to reattach my tendons in my hand (they got cut clean through) when I was 12. Apparently I didn’t shut up the entire surgery…. lol I don’t remember this.

My dad wanted me to not go under during the surgery (cheaper, he said 🙄 ). I was looking at the doctor mentally saying, “Please, please, please say no……” 😆 I don’t know if it was true or not, but the doctor said he needed my hand completely relaxed (ie. me unconscious). I was so grateful.

I lost my entire summer to that bloody cast… I was so mad from that….

Glad it went well and I hope that the healing goes good too! It’ll feel like forever, but it’s worth it, being able to move your arm eventually, right?

The only surgery I’ve had was to get my wisdom teeth out. My doctor is talking about knee surgery but, that’s no biggy. A hole big enough to put a lazar in to fix the scar tissue and I guess a few fragments of something. Can’t be bone…. I don’t know, I’m sure they can figure it out.

I broke my humerus before. Split it from the elbow up. I’m lucky it didn’t need screws.

I’m glad the surgery is over and you just need to get through the recovery. Hopefully the physio will go well.

Aww thanks everybody! These last couple days have been pretty rough. Thank goodness for percocet. 😈

I broke my humerus too, RD! I got thrown from a horse into a fence the day before my 14th birthday. Bleh!
