Be completely sure of what you are getting into.I’d highly recommend contacting and talking to my friend Foxfeather (yes this is her legal name) as she has kept foxes and can give you the low down on what it really means to share your home with them.
http://foxloft.com/contactI have too book mark that page, my son would LOVE her Owl one the Guardians of Ga’Hoole have been some of his favorite books for so very very long!

http://foxloft.com/contactThank you the link Jennifer. We are doing our research. I need as many people opinions and information I can get. Mom isn’t in the dark about foxes. She use to work with wild ones that got hurt and ended up at the wildlife rescue at the university of Tennessee.
I agree with PC. It is a lot of money. I personally would rather save that kind of money for a new car or my wedding coming up. But this is moms money and I am not going to tell her how to spend it. As long as she is happy in the end is all I care about.

Yes, she is a really nice lady. My friend Amber stays with her regularly too.

My art: featherdust.comFebruary 23, 2011 at 2:53 am #838988I was checking this out, since you piqued my interest. You should probably have your mom check these sites out. The first is the Russian program. The second is a Yahoo question and answer.

I read that yahoo link the other day and I have been trying to find an alternative source. How did you manage to find that site for the Russian program? That is amazing! I was trying to find it. I must not have put the right words in Google search.
February 23, 2011 at 3:14 pm #838990I think I came across it from another discussion online.
Certainly, it doesn’t hurt to contact them directly. If you can’t get a fox from them directly, no big deal. But if you can, it might be better than purchasing a fox from a different source with unknown breeding. I really hope this works out for your mom!February 24, 2011 at 12:58 am #838991Let’s keep this on topic. 🙂 ( for once, haha!! ) Those that want to discuss breeding animals, there is a split thread for it now.

My art: featherdust.comFebruary 24, 2011 at 3:11 am #838992Here’s where I got the Russian website address (the post is copied below)
Quote:No. There are only a limited number of tame silver foxes and they are very expensive – on the order of $2,000 US plus another $1,350 for transportation to the US and official registration. They are bred in the Siberian city of Novosibirsk. If you’re interested in buying one, contact Oksana Shpak at the Institute for Cytology and Genetics of the Russian Science Academy. Here is their site in English: http://www.bionet.nsc.ru/bionet/bionetEngl.php?folder=applied&paper=appliedDomestikatciya I’d hate to see these wonderful animals get snapped up by collectors who neuter them – they are a great example of how generations of selective breeding can create a pet from a wild animal and I hope that the Russians and others continue to breed tame foxes.

Based on this, it sounds like you might be able to contact them directly. I would imagine that they have access to English translation, so you might be not need to worry about Russian.

April 4, 2011 at 5:24 pm #841701I know this is an older post, but I remembered reading it and found a good source at work for more information on the domestication of foxes. National Geographic’s (March issue, didn’t put the magazine out right away hehe) cover story was on domesticated foxes, saw when I was putting out our magazines at the library.
here is a link to the online version, not sure if it’s the whole article as it appears in the magazine:
