There is a dragon listed on ebay (an oriental, which I have experience in packing and shipping) that has a shipping charge added on for $40. The seller lives within the US, and the fee is a flat fee (as in, if whoever wins that lives in Canada, US, Guam, anywhere – it will always be $40). My question is this – is this overcharging on shipping? I certainly think so (as I mentioned, I have some experience in shipping this exact type of dragon) since the last one I sent within the US was only $17.00, double boxed.
So I guess my question is this – how much is TOO much as far as shipping on Windstone pieces? $40 I could understand for an Emp, but nothing else really, even an OW wouldn’t cost more than $30 double boxed within the US.
It comes down to this: when someone has a ridiculous charge on shipping for an ebay item, it becomes suspicious. Why? Because ebay DOES NOT calculate the shipping cost in the amount of the fee they will charge the seller when the item sells (I believe it’s 9%, which is a LOT, but doesn’t justify someone tacking on a giant shipping cost to an item – it means YOU are paying THEIR fee for them!). This is also known as getting around ebay fees. But how much is too much?

However, the seller has a feedback of 1. This may just be lack of experience on ebay and worth a message asking for clarification of the shipping charge. Especially if you know what shipping a similar piece has cost you.
August 24, 2011 at 10:15 pm #854275The seller also may have put a shipping price that is for someone else (at UPS or FedEx or something similar) to pack the item and ship it. I had UPS pack an Emperor for me, double boxed and it was $41 to pack and ship him-so although $40 may be high, it might be for a reason. Have you asked the seller about his/her shipping fee?
August 24, 2011 at 11:54 pm #854284My solution was to stop selling on ebay, but I think $40 is excessive. If it’s for a place like mailboxes etc to pack if for them and what not they should state it in the auction, because it’s unlikely they will get bids if they don’t explain that. *shrug* I’m still annoyed that ebay is charging fees on the shipping in general… what does ebay actually DO to warrant a fee on the shipping? Are they going to help ship the item? Certainly not. Ah well… instead of whining about ebay, I just stopped selling. I’d rather cut my prices on the forum instead of forking the money over to them for fees.

I doubt they will actually post it on the auction though, but yah… I guess I’m just in a fighting kind of mood J)
“more of a response to your answer to the other persons question, but you ARE gouging if your upping the price on your shipping so you get a better overall price. if you want more for your item then start it at a higher price, oh wait… you want to gouge ebay of their seller and final value fees, I see. I agree their fees are ridiculous which is why i stopped selling on ebay, but overcharging on shipping isn’t cool. I don’t plan on bidding anyway so I’m not worried, but I just thought your response to a reasonable question was pretty rude. Good luck with your auction.”

I sent this person a message about their prices and I got REAMED OUT, told that I dont have a life and that I should basically stick it where the sun don’t shine!!
Not naming any names, but if people figure out which person this is, I definitely wouldn’t want anything to do with them, they certainly don’t care what others think of them.

I assume that wasn’t you that asked, because it’s more… “polite” than I’d assume the response you got was. But the reply on the page is kind of snotty.
Either way, just means we know who to avoid.
August 25, 2011 at 2:03 am #854303he/she seems quite snotty to me, making it sound like peanuts and bubble wrap cost a ton….
4 things I'm looking for:
1. Mother Meerkat
2. production color Sitting Young Oriental dragons to be made in more colors besides VF, Brimstone would be awesome!
3. Female Griffin – Siamese with White
4. September Raffle Prize 2022 AHD Male GriffinAugust 25, 2011 at 2:33 am #854306Oh my. In the interest of providing an alternative perspective…
I messaged this seller a few minutes after the auction went up, when the shipping was something around $13. That seemed low to me, so I emailed her about her shipping methods.
I got an extremely polite and pleasant response, saying that she is new to ebay, and her daughter helped her to get set up so she could sell the dragon; she was wary of listing on Craigslist. From what she said, it’s likely that the dragon belonged to her late husband.
I briefly went over what double boxing is, and sent her a link to the tutorial hosted on ebay, the old “official” one that we all rely on. I even cautioned her that the Oriental Dragons are especially prone to breaking during shipping, and she thanked me for the heads up.
All in all she was one of the better ebay sellers to communicate with regarding shipping, and the bump in price makes sense to me. Either she is charging what UPS will charge to wrap up the dragon, or she is charging extra because she had to purchase a bag of peanuts and a roll of bubble wrap, after reading the shipping tutorial and realizing how carefully they need to be packed.
So, if nothing else, this price bump from $13 to $40 suggests that she really is taking the tutorial to heart and plans to ship the dragon properly… But she was perfectly pleasant when I talked to her. 🙂
August 25, 2011 at 2:49 am #854310I LOLed when I read what she sent me back to me! She was not pleased to say the least. I feel for her situation, but she was really rude. I laughed because she called me an ebay “hall monitor” which is funny just because I loathe ebay and hate I’m still forced to use it to by my precious Windstones. *grin* I thought it was sort of ironic.

She sent me the exact same thing – called me an “ebay hall monitor” amongst several other highly offensive things. I really WISH I could feel for her situation but it’s hard for me to empathize with anyone like that..
I really wish that I got the same treatment as you did Chris, but this woman really pushed my buttons with her extreme rudeness and I’ve gone so far as to add her to my “no buy/no sell” list.
I appreciate that another buyer will follow the “official” packaging instructions but I still have to disagree with the price of shipping, if only because I ship a lot of Windstones across the US and to other countries.
*shrug* Oh well!

Please visit My Webpage to see my art and PYO's that I've done in the past!August 25, 2011 at 6:05 am #854320I sent a box to Las Vegas by FedEx. Inside was my Windstone box for an Oriental Dragon, packed in peanuts with ample room on all sides. The seller merely took out the box, inserted the dragon, changed the label and sent it back to me. It cost me about $20, insured, for that box to be returned. I am a LONG way from Las Vegas and very close to Indiana. This seller is charging double what I would pay to ship this dragon.
If she wants a certain price, she should put a reserve on it, start it at a higher price, or do a Buy It Now. This high shipping charge is a complete turnoff for me.
August 25, 2011 at 3:24 pm #854327I’m sorry you guys are having a bad time with her. The bump up in price (especially when she broke it down on the question/answer page) adds up to me.
I think most of us are used to buying from sellers who already have supplies lying around, and tend not to charge extra. But the cost she broke down for the price increase is logical. She also got all of her supplies (2 boxes, bag of peanuts, roll of bubble) at UPS, and they charge a lot for their supplies.
She _is_ charging quite a bit for shipping, more than I’d prefer to pay, but I can’t get mad at her for following the tutorial to a T, and purchasing the appropriate supplies.
I guess what I’m trying to say is, yes the shipping may be high because it includes the packing material cost, and she paid a premium at UPS for the supplies; and yes it’s kind of a bummer that the buyer has to recoup her the entire cost, but I honestly don’t think she’s trying to gouge. Just come out “even” on what she had to pay to ship this dragon. It’s not the best situation, but I just don’t see any evidence that she’s trying to rip off anyone.
She was thinking to pull the auction because of all the harassment she’s gotten over the shipping costs. 🙁
Can’t we all just…… get along? XD Heheh.

Harassment???
Seriously, this woman has been sending me the RUDEST emails for NO reason at all. If anyone is harassing anyone, she is.
I WISH we could all get along, I didn’t ask for the emails she ended up sending me. I’ve gone so far as to mark her emails with spam in the hopes that they don’t keep showing up in my inbox. There’s no excuse for the rudness that she has shown me.

I’ll change my original post to just “messages” which is much more accurate.
Sorry about that. 🙂 And I really am sorry you all have had such a prickly time with her.
