July 16, 2008 at 9:00 pm #723151I really like that. Alas, no money.
July 16, 2008 at 9:27 pm #723152I did these for my broken Medic Alert bracelet, something like this without colored rings would be ~$10. With colored rings (this one is about half colored rings) it would be around $20. This is a half Persian weave.
Technically I didn’t do the chain part of this necklace, my fiancee did, but I did the decorative ‘flower’ in the center, I could easily make something else like this (without color) for $40, with colored rings, it would be about $50 (lots on the ‘flower’ and a couple on the necklace itself). Chain weave is 2-in-1.
Another one that my fiancee did, it’s a box weave I believe, or it’s a full persian. I think it’s box though, I could also do something like this for about $45.
The masterpiece. This took me over 3 days, working 8 hours a day on it to do, it has an 8 in 1 weave, and is lined with light colored cotton. As is (with black elastic back/neck) this would be about $200 for a 34 B cup (shown is 34C – though it’s a bit… ah… showy π And future ones would be made to be a bit more covering, I ran out of rings with this particular one). With a full chain back, it would be about $300. I don’t recommend getting something like this with a chain neck, it would hurt. π It’s not at all see-through!
Oh, forgot to mention, these aren’t for sale yet.
July 16, 2008 at 11:05 pm #723153I’d like to get my mom a bracelet for her medic alert bracelet. The one she has is too big and she hates it. It’s always catching on things. It’s gotten to the point where she won’t wear it. (Not the best idea) I’d have to first find out how big her wrist actually is. But, one thing, she won’t wear it if it catches on hair…… She’s picky.
July 16, 2008 at 11:09 pm #723154I could be really careful to make sure the rings are flush, so that they wouldn’t catch. But yes, I would need a measurement of her wrist. π The bad thing is that I’d probably need the ID plate to attach to the bracelet, if it’s anything like most MedicAlert bracelets I’ve seen.
EDIT: I tried to make my bracelet (the MedicAlert one) catch on my hair, and I couldn’t make it do it. And I didn’t do a great job on connecting the rings. π So it would be fine.
July 21, 2008 at 4:04 pm #723155So do you buy the rings connected, or connect each one individually to form the bracelets and chest piece? And about how long did it take you to construct each piece you photographed? Just curious.
July 21, 2008 at 4:44 pm #723156Very cool! Best of luck with your sales: -)

I bought the rings just sawed off, nothing more, I connected them together myself. This is what they look like when I buy them. Well of course, the box is mine, they come in a little baggy actually that is not practical at all for usage. I like to not lose my rings…. π
I use jeweller’s pliars to bend the rings and attach them to each other, some weaves (like 4-in-1 and tachnically 8-in-1 is similar) are fairly easy to make. I said on the picture how long it took me to make the shirt, 3 days, 8 hours or so each day. Ridiculously long.
The necklace, the chain part I could do in under 2 hours, the flower takes an hour on it’s own. If I get it right the first time, sometimes I don’t and have to restart. Yuck.
The box chain one, I don’t know particularily, I’ve never completed a necklace in that weave (like I said, my fiancee did it) but we work at a similar pace and he did it in, about 5 hours.
The MedicAlert bracelet took 2 1/2 because though the rings I have work well with the weave (if a bit tight), I’m quite not fast at the half Persian. It’s harder then it looks.
Right now I’m making a belt from a simple 4-in-1 weave (only one size of ring, so not like the bracelet, I am actually out of the larger rings right now), will probably take me, about 5 hours? It’s a fast enough weave, but it has to be a meter in length.
I base my prices more on the cost of the rings then how long it takes me to make them. Those things are expensive, I get them here http://www.metaldesignz.com as I posted earler.
July 21, 2008 at 11:13 pm #723158Thank you for the information, Dragon87. I was just curious, as you are the only person I’ve talked to who works with metal rings. Very cool π

The only really bad things are the cramps in your hands from holding pliars, when you twist it wrong and either have the ring fly across the room (I’ve found them months later sometimes… π ) or pinch your fingers… the pinching hurts! π
Other then that, I find it very relaxing and fun, though, selling my stuff seems to be my only way to make any kind of funds over the summer right now, so I’ve really gotten into it. Though the belt is a gift for a friend of mine. And I need to remake my brother’s wallet chain (his broke – it was aluminum and he put alot of strain on it, now I just use stainless which holds up MUCH BETTER).
*sigh* With all the free stuff I gotta do, I won’t have anything left to sell! π
July 22, 2008 at 12:35 pm #723160Yay, Dragon87! Another ‘ringer’! I use sterling or fine silver rings for jewelry chains or pieces that will be worn like jewelry or sometimes copper or bronze. Those get a really pretty patina to them. I’ve also worked in gold for jewelry, but right now it’s terribly expensive. Oh, and niobium rings are pretty cool too! I leave stainless for ‘clothing’ type maille. I admit that I’m a glutton for punishment ’cause I make my own rings… far less expensive than ready made… your work is lovely!

July 23, 2008 at 9:30 am #723161That looks like great fun, once you know how to do it. I like the things you made. It was interesting reading about the different styles. I had no idea there were so many!

I like the stainless for general work because its starts shiny, it just gets shinier as it ages, and it doesn’t turn your fingers funny colors.
I like the niobium too, actually I just couldn’t afford them at the time.
I don’t think I’m allowed to have the materials in my apartment for making the rings (from what I hear, it can get pretty noisy), so I just buy when I have to.
How long have you been doing chainmaille?
