We needed to put a notice at the top of our Windstone Store page to warn people that we now will have to block their ip address from using the website if they are running any robotic auto-refresh scripts.
Folks who are using these scripts don’t even realize that this kind of program is a huge problem for our host server, so I want to be sure that this notice doesn’t sound angry or off-putting to well intentioned people.
What do you think? How do you feel when you read this sort of notice on a store page?
This is how it reads now:“Running scripted programs to scan for updates or to auto-refresh our store is not permitted due to the huge hazard these programs present to our website. Starting this week, users found to be running such programs will be blocked and will be unable to access this site. Please click here [link] for more information. We apologize for this inconvenience.”
Should we reword it? What would sound better?
July 15, 2011 at 6:03 pm #851154I think it sounds fine. I don’t read it as being angry or rude – just informative and to the point.
July 15, 2011 at 6:43 pm #851159I think it sounds very appropriate. Very matter of fact and to the point. I’m very blunt so I like blunt people, and no it does not soundrude at all in my opinion.
July 15, 2011 at 6:44 pm #851160Same here….I dont find it grouchy, just straightforward. 🙂
July 15, 2011 at 7:32 pm #851168I agree. It’s informative, straightforward, and considering that you actually apologize at the end of it, it could hardly be called rude. I’d leave it as is. 🙂
July 15, 2011 at 7:56 pm #851170Ok good! Just as long as you guys understand it isn’t aimed at anyone in particular. The problem scripts could be coming from some kind of nonhuman “entity” according to our server-host-person and not from a forum member at all.
July 15, 2011 at 8:09 pm #851172The auto refresh blocker thing is set to be installed this weekend. After that, anyone who tries to start an auto refresh program (but didn’t have one running before) will just find out that the program doesn’t work. From what I understand, the only people who will get blocked from the site completely are the ones who are already running programs when the blocker is turned on. So by monday the notice in the store won’t need to be up anymore anyway 🙂
July 15, 2011 at 9:47 pm #851185No, it does not sound too anything. This has been talked about since the forum was in the process of upgrading and several times since. I thought this was already in effect and had been for a while. Evidently the only thing that will get the attention of those doing it will be to shut them down. Then of course they will say they didn’t see any of the many postings about it.
I say don’t worry about it, Melody. Just do it …. Before your host server tells Windstone to find another host server and shuts us all down.
July 16, 2011 at 1:00 am #851205I thought it was very politely worded. I wouldn’t worry about it, Melody. I think you did a good job of getting the info out there without being offensive.
July 16, 2011 at 2:44 am #851208I’m really sorry if any of it sounded grouchy. I haven’t been having a good week and it came out in the wrong ways! No excuses, but I wanted to explain. I am sorry.

My art: featherdust.comJuly 16, 2011 at 8:30 am #851228Ok good! Just as long as you guys understand it isn’t aimed at anyone in particular. The problem scripts could be coming from some kind of nonhuman “entity” according to our server-host-person and not from a forum member at all.
Non-human entity? O_O It’s Skynet! *panics*
That’s how the machines will break us, taking away our Windstones!
*Really hopes at least some people here have seen Terminator*
July 16, 2011 at 8:46 am #851210Jennifer, it does NOT sound grouchy. The only thing I would change is to leave off the “We apologize for this inconvenience.”
Why should YOU apologize to people (or spambots) for something that is costing Windstone money and causing problems with your host server?
I guess I am heartless. I would rather see a few people “inconvenienced” than see every single one of us unable to access the store because your host server cuts you off.
