I think airbrush is hard as hell….
I have one….all kinds of tips for it and all that….but can’t do it right….
anthony tried it and he’s good at it….but I’m better using a brush….
I liked the way a lot of airbrush looks…..
and art is art….doesn’t matter what you use…it just matters if you like it….and it makes you feel something….

I’ve seen some *amazing* things done with an airbrush, and a fellow that has a shop in a mall in Paducah KY has some paintings of Dodge Vipers up among the T-shirt samples he does and they’re pretty awesome. Having used an airbrush, I know they were more work than spraying a base coat and then shading. He’s got gradients in the track/road, swirls in burnout smoke and all other sorts of coolness that you’d be hard pressed to achieve with a paint brush.
It’s all in what you’re looking for, usually. Don’t sell yourself short just because you use an airbrush and don’t let that chick get to you.
Wish I lived closer, I love seeing that inda stuff
Next time I’m down there, I’ll stop in and ask if they’ve got a website, but I don’t go that way often, since it’s an hour south, and I’ve got malls and walmarts up here without the crazy Kentucky drivers!
March 10, 2007 at 8:12 pm #550363When I used to drive truck , I remember some of the Ky drivers were really odd. I was in Lousiville a lot, and holy cow. My aunt lives there though, and gets really offensive about driving, so i don’t bring it up much 😆 But she always drives like the back half of her car is on fire.
March 10, 2007 at 8:26 pm #550364I have to agree,it all comes down to the end results.personally ive seen fantastic airbrush work,I also have seen fantastic hand painting.and as far as myself well I have tried airbrushing(I suck)I quess because I really just dont get it,but then there really are some of us old dogs that you cant teach new tricks to.and no I dont consider it cheating just because I cant do it.and if i remember correctly, airbrushing is also considered an art form is it not?but then maybe i have been living under a rock somewhere 😆

Yeah, that’s how KY folks tend to drive. I hate going to Paducah, people are insane. They cut you off, tailgate, speed, drive down turn lanes (no kidding, went to turn into a drive at Mayfield, was in the turn lane where I was supposed to be and right next to where I was turning, an older gentleman came barreling down the turn lane, nearly hit me head on, flipped me off, drove around me on the right, went the wrong way down the right side of the road and turned into the hardware store three blocks away) and generally scare me senseless.
March 10, 2007 at 11:30 pm #550366Not having used many mediums, and not being very talented, I’d tell her kindly to piss off. I have seen incredible works with a burnt stick that otherwise couldn’t be done. It truly sounds as though she is upset about the quality of her own work, and how long it has taken her. Use want you want, and just remember to be yourself about it. Don’t let someone else tell you how to do your art. You can always try new things, and if they work cool, if not, maybe it will some other time.

March 11, 2007 at 12:38 am #550368Thanks guys. Purplekitty say: Don’t judge the many by the actions of the few, idiots exist world wide.
As to the art, I’ve found that using each medium to its own advantage works best for me. I use the airbrush for softness and color blend and the brush for fine details and delicate work.
March 11, 2007 at 1:27 am #550369I’ve seen AMAZING artwork created with crayons on junky old paper… and I’ve seen HORRID artwork created with the finest, highest quality oil paints and brushes on the finest of canvases.
Point being that art is generally only as good as an artist, and the tools and mediums are only that. 🙂 The only time something like that should matter is if the mediums add/detract from the quality of the art (for example, I’d prefer Windstones painted with artist-grade acrylics over ones painted with 99 cent craft paint, because the artist grade paints won’t fade or crackle with time and proper care 🙂 )Volunteer mod- I'm here to help! lol…niiiccceee phil. Yep, this statement pretty much sums up my feelings as well. I would probably omit the kindness aspect of it though.
bluepony I think I know who you’re talking about. Well, I don’t know her name but she’s on various model horse forums, right? If it’s who I’m thinking it is…she’s an idiot. She’s definantly one of those people who’s words should go in one ear and out the other. Please don’t waste another millisecond of your life being concerned with anything she’s said.
For a loooonnng time I refused to accept people who could draw on the computer as artists. I thought that computer art was not art, it was art made by a machine and not a human. But, I realized, that I was an idiot. Art is in a person’s imagination. If a person has a beautiful idea in their head, who cares what medium they used to bring it alive? Like everyone else said, it just matters what the quality of your finished piece is like, regardless of what medium was used. You just gotta find what works best for YOU. 😉
March 11, 2007 at 4:42 am #550371Thanks guys 😀 Big hugs.
Yes, BTW, she’s someone pretty wellknown in horsie land.
I think why it did ruffle my feathers a little was because I pour my whole heart and soul into stuff. Well, some of the goofy little stablemates i put on eBay I don’t, they are just creative bordom gone wild. But, the big horses, sometimes they take weeks, and sometimes I don’t do any of my chores, I just paint and work and work and paint and they are done in 3 days because I just HAVE to see them finished. But, I consider them a small peice of me. They generally seem well received, she just hit me after a bad spell on eBay where my work wasn’t selling for beans. My husband told me to take the good with teh bad, and some people are just like that, but it did still ruffle my feathers a little.
I was under the impression that airbrushing was it’s own little art form. i’ve been doing it for almost 4 years..hmm…maybe 5? might have to recheck that now. Anyway, I love it. really. I’ve been so pleased with some peices that I’ve cried. hubby says I’m too hard on myself. Up until about 6 months ago, i didn’t really like my own work. Only recently.
But enough about me. Back to trying to figure out my sig! haha
March 11, 2007 at 6:21 am #550372Oh it IS an art form in and of itself…I mean, look at the people who airbrush designs and pictures on cars and motorcycles….

Well put.
My father, at one time, was a professional artist and used both airbrush and hand mediums (paint, pencil, ink, etc.) on 2D artwork and model air planes. He once told me the person who can both airbrush well and hand paint well will do better than one or the other alone because both disciplines are needed.
As a collector I usually lean toward airbrushed work because the blending is usually well done, but I have seen some hand painting on this forum that was so well done I would have chosen it regardless. I agree with others here that it comes down to the final result as well as time spent (if doing it for income).
It sounds like the person who complained was just jealous of another person’s skill. I would weigh what they say with more worth if they could actually airbrush and then chose not to for personal reasons. With experience comes insight.

I saw a big rig similar to that when I was driving. He had the whole truck and trailer painted. It was amazing. I took pix, but I don’t have a scanner, and they are all hard copy now, sorry.
My husband is actually perfectly ok with me buying a car just for that reason. He wants to, when we get our next place(no room here) have a small shed or garage for me to paint in, and he wants to buy me the shell of a car. He said I get one shot, and ifI’m any good, i can paint our 2005 Trailblazer 😯 that way, it won’t be just white. I want to paint our green escort with froggies on it, a huge branch coming up the hood and maybe a pond or something down by the ground, but he pointed otu that’s the muddiest part of the car, so maybe they’ll just be misc. froggies on the doors, and a huge branch on the hood. Nice thing is, he wrecked it several years ago, so it needs a new hood anyway, I just need to trot to the junk yard and get one.
