While we are on the subject of tips, does anyone have any tips for airbrushing beginners?
I just got one this week, and experimented a little with it on a grifin I’ve had sitting around. It worked pretty good, but I was too excited to use it I never did a basecoat so I have to repaint it. Should I go dark to light, light to dark? What kind of paint is the best to use? How far or close shoudl I hold it to the piece? Things like that.
I’m hoping to work with it a while longer maybe tomorrow or Saturday. It’s been FREEZING in MA all week though so I haven’t wanted to go to my studio since it’s almost below zero! LOL! My feet, hands, and butt are still frozen from using it just now =) I’ve had to store all my paints in my house because they would have froze in the weather this week.
Hmm, I should post some pics of the studio. I wonder if it looks like the Windstone warehouse at all? LOLGot a busted Windstone?

-J R R TolkienFebruary 7, 2007 at 7:37 am #529069ooh a new airbrush, how exciting Drag0n! ^_^ I’ve never used one, but I’d think you’d go light to dark, judging by the painting tutorial on the PYO website. I can’t wait to see one of your painted pieces that’s airbrushed!
February 7, 2007 at 8:13 am #529070I’m learning to airbrush too, though I’m airbrushing on fur, which is a whole ‘nother kettle of fish. Detail control isn’t so important, but there are all kinds of other fun problems.
February 7, 2007 at 9:41 am #529071I decided to give up on it for a while until I have some “throw away” sculptures I can hock on ebay. I think I might have to look up a “basic” tutorial though.

Just a thought, but they have really cheap unpainted bisque dragons on Ebay quite often. It may pay to practice on them…

I don’t go too thick though, just a nice thin layer of white on th entire piece. Hmmm, too bad Windstone couldn’t just send them that way 😆
Only a million years later, I respond! 😆
This was discussed for a while, but it just added another step, took more time, and would drive the cost of the piece up for the end users. Then there would be people wanting different color base coats and.. and.. Well. It was just easier all around, this way. 😉

February 12, 2007 at 5:19 am #529076I always enjoyed painting the Driftwood Dragon Bisque from Doc Holiday. They are good starter pieces. I have the molds for the set or the original five. It’s the Fighting ones, the babies, the castle one, the one with the arched neck and the one with the wings spread.
I’ve always had a soft spot for the Grand Dragon as well. Also Doc Holiday I believe, it was the first dragon I ever painted.
I’ve painted this one before. It’s enormous and light up really nice. The dragon leave something to be desired though.

I had a black and red crackle/crystal glaze, but I waited so long it dried up 😥

Some of those are cool. Are they unpainted or painted?February 12, 2007 at 10:32 pm #529079Well, you can only order molds from this site. They are painted for disply purposes. The price is for the mold. You can find alot of bisque pretty cheap on ebay though.
I can personally have these guys at my disposal sicne I have the molds at my studio. I haven’t poured or fired up the ciln in a while though. Plus I’d have to clean the greenware and fire them. Blah

How much would it cost for the other ones you haven’t made yet?
February 13, 2007 at 12:22 am #529081They don’t cost much to make at all. Just my time to pour and clean the greenware. Most of them are simple. The Ambush Dragon is a little bit of work because it’s in 4 pieces.
It’s just FREEZING over at the studio right now because we shut it down for the winter so it would take a few weeks before I could find the time to do it. I can pack up all 3 of the bisque ones if you want and ship them out to you. Then I’ll let you know what it cost to ship ’em and you can pay me after the fact. They are very light, but very fragile so I have to put them in big boxes, but since they are so light it shouldn’t be more then about 20 bucks to send them all together.
