For beginners? And what is your favorite brand of paint? And what do you like painting the most?
January 18, 2007 at 1:30 pm #489320January 18, 2007 at 5:28 pm #529054YAY! A question for me?!?! *cracks fingers in readiness for typing*
Well, for a beginer a Windstone PYO is not the thing to learn on. These are definately, without a doubt, the most challenging sculptures to paint and paint well. Iβve done lots of ceramics in my day and, not to boast, but Iβm a pro at those. Though they are COMPELETLY DIFFERENT from painting a PYO. Once you slap a coat of paint on them though you can easily get good practice going. Ceramics absorb paint much more then the gypsum does, so it is actually harder to blend colors on ceramics then on a PYO. So if thatβs what you want to practice I donβt reccommend picking up a few cheap bisque pieces. Melodyβs Muse would come in good for practice, but I havenβt heard about it for a while.
Favorite Brand of paint huh? I donβt really have a favorite. On 90% of my pieces I use cheap 99 cent squirt bottle paints. I tend to favor Anitaβs Acrylic Craft Paint if Iβm on a budget, but I like the Golden Paints too. They are very thick and creamy and often apply with one or two coats. I need alot of coats with Anitaβs but they blends REALLY WELL with just a tough of medium or water, though since it is thin you have to do a few coats so itβs a trade off. It never seems to affect the detail of the pieces though and thatβs really my main goal. I hate it when details in the fur or feathers get washed out because of too much paint.
What do I like to paint most? As far as PYOs go I like the griffin alot beacuse you have SO MANY different ways you can paint them. Plus that are the biggest too so they are the easiest to get a nice array of blended colors on. I really like the Ki-Rins too. They are definately the funnest to paint. Griffs are ALOT of work. For some reason my paint brushes are hateing the wolves. Iβm not satisfied with any Iβve done so far. I like the dragon too, but I know Iβll like the larger on much more. There is only so much you can do with the little PYO dragons. Granted I still like them, but the big ones, like the griffins will ba alot more versatile with all the differnt layers of skin and scales I bet they will be just as challenging as the griffins and be able to be painted millions of variations that no 2 will ever look alike.
Still wanting a PYO Flap Cat! I canβt wait till Mel decides to work on one. Hmm, well. I dont know if any of this was useful, but I finially got to rant for a bit on my little corner of the forum for the time being =) Thanks Ski

I use the cheap paints for quite a bit and I do find the creamier they are the easier they are to blend. You said the Golden paints are thick? What type? cuz the ones I got recently, that are not iridescent, are very thin.
I can tell you like painting the griffin! It shows in your work! The kirins, too, are quite lovely. Any more in the works?
January 18, 2007 at 6:57 pm #529056Can I jump in here and ask how many people start out with a base coat? Pros or cons? Thanks!
January 18, 2007 at 6:58 pm #529057I do a base coat because Water recommended it to me.
January 18, 2007 at 6:59 pm #529058Ummmm⦠I dont. Probably should? Yes? No?
January 18, 2007 at 7:06 pm #529059sorry to hijack drag0n- Water said that putting down a base coat usually helps with the absorption from the gypsum. It helps later on when you want to blend colors and it keepts the colors from looking streaky. They call it priming in the model horse world and about everyone does it.
January 18, 2007 at 7:23 pm #529060Yes, but usually only white. I find I get the richest, truest color when painting over white. I can never get the same vibrancy when I try to paint a light over a dark (think watercolors).

Sorry Iβm late! Yea, I do the same thing as Nam, I always do a white base coat. Once in a while, if Iβm working with darks I will base coat black, but itβs so hard to cover unless your doing an almost all black piece. Antiquing it is faster, but messier. It just takes forever to build on top of black, drybrushing works best, but it takes a while.

I bet if you did a base coat first you would notice a big difference in how the finished product comes out. Lots of positives come from it, like the paint sticks and blends better. Donβt have to worry so much about the areas you touch where the paint doesnβt want to stick. The piece will absorb less paint so youβll have less white pinholes you have to touch up later.
I donβt go too thick though, just a nice thin layer of white on th entire piece. Hmmm, too bad Windstone couldnβt just send them that way
If you want to be picky about it and youβre not going to have ANY WHITE in your finished product you can also base coat with the lightest color that is going to be on the final product to save time. *shrug* It doesnβt really matter.

Oh, I almost missed this one. When I git the Golden Paints I accidently got the ones in the squeeze tubes. They look like the kind youβd use to paint on a canvas. I just saw acrylic and clicked on βem. I thought only oils came that way. I ordered them at http://www.dickblick.com and thought I got the regular kind in the stand up tubes. I think they were called heavy body acrylics. They are basically the same as the regular kind, but are alot more buttery. I just add a touch of water or medium to thin them out sometimes.
