What do you do for a break from work? Also, what are your favorite things to do in the summer?

I can feel my throat tightening up into “whine ” mode, so I will do my best to attempt to surpress this. We don’t take vacations. Lately , what we do beside work is eat, shower, and go to bed. Our big weekend activity is cooking dinner for friends, and trying to catch up with house chores. My big treat is to have a scrap of time to work on Reptangle or the COA sketch book a week, though often months go by without a chance to get to them…(Sorry, that was a whine )
My favorite things to do in the summer: I like to breathe, I love the summer smells around here, and I have been blessed with a LACK of allergies.
What do you-all do in the summer? Do you take real vacations?July 9, 2010 at 7:17 am #820084We haven’t been on a “real” vacation in 10 years, but this year we took our 2 year old twins to the beach for the first time. They learned that sand doesn’t taste very good!! :yum:
July 9, 2010 at 9:24 am #820085Well you’re probably still having more fun than me if you don’t have allergies! I have terrible plant allergies, and I live in an area that prides itself on the number of trees around. ๐
July 9, 2010 at 2:40 pm #820086no real vacations here… my husband and i are very dedicated to our work and its difficult to get away. my vacation is doing my art. it helps me get away mentally and that’s what i really need most days. when we do get away, its to visit family in Oregon or Arizona. so i wouldn’t really call that a “vacation” since we bring work with us of course! ๐
July 9, 2010 at 3:47 pm #820087I suspect that those that are self-employed or own a small business rarely if ever take a real vacation (unless their business is so booming that they can afford to)! I know that myself and my peers in this ‘self employed sole-proprietor’ position have to work during nearly every ‘free’ moment just to stay afloat!
When I do travel it is business related and is always a working trip. When I was in Pittsburgh 2 weeks ago I got less sleep than I ever do at home because I was up all night working!

My art: featherdust.comJuly 9, 2010 at 9:00 pm #820088The closest I’ve gotten to a vacation was working at the Ren faire on weekends. But I can’t do that this summer. The last trip I took was to move my dad down to Florida (more work than play ๐ ). Unless you count the 2 days I drove to (day one)and back from (day two) Arkansas last year to return my aunt. I miss vacations, but if I don’t work I don’t get paid, so no vacations for me. ๐ฅ

That’s all I want to do, anyway. We take mini-trips maybe up to Chicago for a music concert, drive six hours stay the night, drive home six hours. Stuff like that. I’ve taken a trip to Mt. Ida Arkansas a couple times to collect crystals from mother earth. I don’t like to be away from home long – something almost always happens and I end up worrying most the trip I’m away. Vacation is time at home really, without any committments to do whatever the heck comes to mind. That happens once every 15 years or so. I am hoping retirment will be a real vacation – sell EVERYTHING (even my Windstones lol) and just up and go wherever my whims send me!!! Well, that’s my dream vacation. lol
July 9, 2010 at 10:36 pm #820090Um…what’s a vacation? ๐

That’s me!! Nope, even if I had money, I have all these critters [dogs and birds] that it would be expensive to have someone watch them! Then I would worry about them while I was gone. Nope, I ‘m just fine staying home–eating is a good past time and I love to read a good book. Not having to answer to anyone is just wonderful! ๐

What do you-all do in the summer? Do you take real vacations?Awww…That made me sad. ๐ I wish I could do something about that, and send you on a nice mini-vacation. *hugs*
The biggest vacation I ever went on was my honeymoon. We went to Florida a year after we got married (to save up for it) and we went to Sea World, Medieval Times, and the beach. ๐ Then this last year, my mom moved to Florida, and once, tickets were really cheap, and since Chloe could sit on my lap, Chloe and I flew to Florida to see my mom and her new husband. I barely spent any money with that, but unfortunately, that meant that we didn’t do much-oh well-I was happy to see my mom. ๐We will drive to either Omaha (2 hours) or Minneapolis (4 hours) to have a mini-vacation, but we usually only do one of those once a year. My husband works so much now, and I only get to see him one day out of the whole week. I am grateful that he has a job, but I am afraid that him being gone so much is hurting our relationship. ๐
Someday, i would like to go to Hawaii. ๐ I love the ocean, and I love nature, so that seems like a great place to go. Do you have a place you dream about going someday?
July 11, 2010 at 7:50 am #820093My family goes up to a lake about four hours away and stay in my grandpa’s house. We have a boat and can do water sports. The last real vacation we went on was a cruise down to cabo because we got cheap rooms on the boat. The cruise was pretty boring though and mexico is just not that fun of a place to visit… I would say my favorite vacation i’ve been on is to costa rica and hawaii. Next year i’m hoping to do some backpacking in Europe with my bf and stay with his family part of the time. I have family over there as well but i’ve never met them so staying with them might be weird.. ๐
I also would like to know where you would want to go Melody if you had the chance?July 13, 2010 at 9:07 pm #820094Being retired and living in southeastern FL I have several girlfriends that love to take cruises so I usually take several a year with somebody. The b/f won’t go he says he gets seasick – so do I but one Bonnine tablet a day takes care of that. Also I have friends that come from KC, Atlanta or CA and want to go to Key West or someplace in FL so off I go but no really regular scheduled vacations.
