I do both at home. If I have a family, I arrange it by family for display here. But if Im collecting something in all colors such as Curls or Poads™, then regardless of color, the same sculpts stay together.

I can see the benefits of both kinds of display but whomever said when you put a whole family of, say, peacocks together, the individual sculpts become over whelmed by color and it all washes together leaving out some detail of Melody’s work.

I know it can also seem like a Storm Trooper army if all of the same sculpts in every color at displayed together, but beyond that, for my senses, Im hit with a bunch of colors and my mind easily wants to make a decision as to which one looks best in what color. It would be easy cause they are all there together.

IF you do put them all together by sculpt only (such as all the Mother Dragons), I suggest some kind of label or notation to the buyer on the shelf that “she has many family members else where in the store!” It would get them into browsing further, IMO. But whenever I see Windstones anywhere, I tend to browse every single nook and cranny of the store including asking clerk to please check the back for any old or new inventory if Im looking for something special or retired. Never hurts to ask that. But, Im a collector like you guys and not a casual buyer.

Hope everyone’s advice is helping you Dave, and not making it more of a decision with which to struggle.

Def not all the sasme dragon in a different color. I would love to see a mismatched family and be able to ask if you have that *point* sculpt in that *points* color. It gives a good variety of both what sculpts are available and what colors are available.

I like to see a mixed family. Then I can see what sculpts I like and what colours I like. Then I can say oh I really like that black gold, and I’d like it on the male dragon. So on.

When they are displayed by all the same colour in a family then they don’t stand out.

When I display them for selling, I can only bring a few with me. I try to make sure I have at least one of each current color and a variety of sculpts. So at least most of the sculpts are represented and all of the colors are there. Then people can do what Ski does, point out sculpt and color to place an order.

Thanks everyone! This is really helping me to see things from the other side of the counter.

This is a key point that has me thinking beyond what I’d expected.

Do you favor that way BECAUSE it is the way it’s done? It fits in with the rest of that store because that’s the way the store is laid out?

If you go into a cosy brick-a-brack store you expect to find things laid out with no particular arrangement, whereas if you go into the collectibles store in the mall everything is all geometrically arranged and laid out with conscious intent. Would things feel “wrong” if you went into a store (like mine) that looks a bit of a jumble EXCEPT for the deliberately arranged displays of Windstone Dragons?

I used to be a grocery store stocker (1986 to 1995) and even now find myself in a grocery store taking a can of something off the shelf to buy, and pulling the can behind it to the front with the label facing out.

I get around the impulse of customers to rearrange the Windstones in my store by having glass display cases, and shelving behind the cases that is not accessible to the customer. Whenever I see someone looking at the Windstones I let them know that I can bring them down for inspection.

To me having a shelf of the same sculpt in different colors is too much like a Breyer conga line.

For the first time ever, last night I laid out an entire (retail) family together. Although it was a fascinating to see so many Dragons in the same color in the same place, I have to agree with Blackdesertwind that they all seemed to blend together so that nothing drew my attention. Yet clearly this is not the effect on everyone, as I know that a lot of collectors do arrange their statues by color family.

So far, despite the poll results, I am becoming inclined to think that this is the way I should go. Up until now, I’ve tended to group a few of a family together here and a few of a different family there deliberately trying not to have different versions of the same sculpture next to each other.

I’m thinking of perhaps having a shelf with ALL of the Mother Dragons, and another with ALL of the Hatching, but have other shelves with a variety of different dragons of different colors. That way I can show off the range of styles over here and the range of colors over there.

Does this sound like the sort of display that would get you to think “I wonder if they have this Dragon in that color?” and maybe ask at the counter?

I rearrange mine at home alot…so that dragons in the background can be shifted to a more-viewed spot for a while. That way all my pieces get viewing time. In a store I like to see them grouped by family, in mixed colors….I don’t really know why, I just like them that way.

I like to see mixed groups. Probably because that is how I buy Windstones. With very few exceptions I have only one of each sculpt and one of each color.

My are mostly all together with their familys of the same color….except for the Emperors….they all stick together, so all of the different colors are together in one, I think they look really sharp. 😀

I would say ditto to this…my mother used to own a gift shop and did actually sell Windstones at one time. Her only serious problem was that people would take them down to compare colours and of course that would lead to potential damages. But if yours are all behind glass I say mix it up.

Yes. Id definitely ask at the counter. And that may be very cool, to do the store in both kinds of ways. All one sculpt in varying colors here and over there, a family of dragons in a variety of colors.

I voted for individual dragons but tend to arrange mine by color families except for the emperors and fledglings because the top and bottom shelves in my display area are the only ones tall enough for the emperor and I love to see a line of emperors of every color, of course, I display all the curlies together.

At home, I have everything mixed up, depending on where I have room. However, if I had a store with a larger selection, I would place them by color family, with complementing colors next to each other. Stragglers on a mixed shelf complementing each other as much as possible. My reasoning is three-fold:

                  1) It helps one compare the other sculpts in that color scheme to one another and might make an individual tempted to buy more than one (ie. a set of the male and mother dragon, or mother and hatchling, male and fledge, etc.). Good from a selling stand point.

                  2) A person can see how the whole family looks as well and can pick and choose which colors they like better on which sculpt. Not everyone likes all the colors available (a person may only like one color scheme and hate the other colors and only want to look at that color).

                  3) By having everything by color family, it is also easier on the eye. If you had 4 or 5 color schemes (ie. Rainbows, Black Golds, Red Fires, and Emerald Peacock) all mixed up randomly, it can be visually overstimulating to a degree. I know I would be overwhelmed if I saw a large number displayed on top of each other like that with lots of dragons (and have been at one store!). Not as big of a problem on pieces as large as the emperor, but if you had complete families of all the current production colors jumbled up, it could be too much for some people. It would take me a second to take it all in and focus on individual pieces before I could begin to look at figuring out with one I’d specifically buy. Not long, but it would still be like a ‘pop’ to my visual senses which isn’t always comfortable (but I’m also very sensitive to color). Some people may be put off a little by that chaos (those more on the borderline of spending that extra bit of money or making that spontaneous purchase).

                  Just my two cents.

You make a good point here. But I think it doesn’t just apply to an overcolorful display of Dragons. I worry that the vast array of color schemes, both general and special production, may be too much for the casual purchaser to witness prior to becoming a Windstone enthusiast.

I have found that having a glass case with just a few Dragons in it can sell more than if I have a display case stuffed full of Dragons. Once the choice gets to be too many, a customer may simply decide it’s all too much. Perhaps instead of seeing a couple of really nice Dragons that would look great on the mantlepiece, what they see instead is a bottomless pit of financial destitution as a result of wanting to collect all of these great Dragons.

My plan is to try to distribute smaller sub-families around the store, some showing a single color scheme; some showing a single statue in different colors, but not attempting to batter the customer’s sensibilities with too much of a good thing all in one place.
