Well…. its happened again. Yesterday I got a phone call from the fraud department of our bank wanting to verify a few charges ( so I went online to check our account, everything seemed fine)
So I called them… and some.. oh so wonderful person got a hold of my bank card # and tried to make some charges…. But this time the bank caught it before it went thru! (Hi-5 Wachovia)

We have had this account for 16 years… and now twice in a 6 month peroid our account has been compromised… 🙄 🙄 WHAT THE HECK IS GOING ON!!! 😡
What makes someone feel entitled to steal someone’s information??? Im just sick right now….. and mad. 😡 Just give me 5 minutes alone with this person 👿 (ok not really, just makes me feel better saying it!) Anyone eles going thru thus? Or have been thru this? Should I be paying for things with checks and cash?

I have been through this with my debit card (my bank was great and they returned my funds). I had to file a police report, etc.

I would be interested to know if you think the info was stolen online or in person (Kalandra and everybody). I am 99.9% sure mine was stolen by our waitress at a restaurant in NYC. They had made copies of my card and were having a field day in Toys R Us stores in central Jersey. They were actually trying to make another large purchase while I was on the phone with my bank! About 6 months later, they busted a huge CC ring in NY/NJ.

I’m so sorry this happened to you again, Kalandra. People just suck. 😡

oh wow.. i am so sorry… these things are just awful to deal with. not to mention that sick feeling in your stomach.

this actually just happened to me last week! i got a call first thing monday morning by my bank wanting to verify some charges. turns out someone in Dubai had gotten hold of my debit card number and went shopping. yeah, not me.. last time i checked i wasnt in Dubai, of all places! good thing that the bank caught it and denied the charges. of course, they cancelled my card and said they would send me a new one… but didnt. so i just now got my replacement yesterday after several talks on the phone with the bank. sheesh… oh well, got my new card and time to go shopping online again!! hehe…i have been so deprived. 😀

my husband actually had a more interesting story… at one point he went to make a purchase, in person, with his debit card. the cashier asked to see his i.d. and denied it because it didn’t match his card. this of course was completely not right. so he checked his card and sure enough, it was his exact card but with someone elses name and account number on it. he called up the bank and long story short… someone had replaced his card with one that looked exactly like his (same bank, same card) so that he wouldnt notice it was gone. the bank found some huge credit card fraud ring that would swap cards with someone like at a restaurant or if you lost your wallet somewhere. the waiter would take your card back to the register but bring back someone elses that looked the same as yours. wouldnt even notice it and that would give the person with the stolen card plenty of time to go shopping before you noticed and closed the account. so yeah… be careful out there!!

Oh my gosh! 😮 the lengths people will go!

That’s just terrifying, daydreamer! 😮 I’m going to be looking at my card more closely after restaurant payments, that’s for certain! They already make me uneasy with the taking it away to scan elsewhere.

Kalandra, I hope your husband can figure it out. Twice in half a year–how awful! I’m glad your bank jumped right on it this time.

After I read this post, I immediately went and checked my credit and debit cards to make sure they were mine! It does upset me that there are those out there who have this entitlement issue of feeling that it is okay to steal someone else’s info. These people are not buying necessities like food but things they want–electronics, toys, furniture! In this economy we’re all trying to keep a close watch on our money what little we have of it and don’t need some jerk charging their new 46″ TV on our cards!

I remember being told to also watch your statements closely–sometimes they will put little charges like $5 or so and if you don’t dispute it, that leaves the door open to them to put more costly things on there. I did have someone start putting these little charges on my card once and I jumped on it right away! I never had to pay for them and my bank cancelled my card and issued another one with a new number. I’ve had in the past my bank change my number just for percaution. So check your statements and if you don’t remember or recognize a charge–call right away!!!

Thats how the bank cought it so fast, they did a test charge for .58 cents… and when it cleared…they started making a bunch of online charges and some international ones
Keep a super close eyes on your stuff!

I had something similar too! I bought some computer software over the internet from a place I never heard of (stupid mistake #1!!). The next four days that company charged me for $2, then $80, then $178 😮 then I caught it. My bank was great and reimbursed me while they investigated. After they investigated they found a detective in California was investigating the same company for doing that to thousands of people all over the world!!

The only advice I have is to stick with websites you are familiar with or accept Paypal and to check your account daily!

I was on a cruise a few months ago and my friend and I was in St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands and I found a ring I wanted (and believe me after my dealings with Diamonds International on a previous cruise I will never again buy a piece of expensive jewelry without putting it on my credit card. (I used travelers checks when buying from DI ) When the saleslady went to verify that the charge was OK with AT&T Universal they wanted to speak to me and ask what my secuirty word was. Fortunately after thinking about it for about five minutes I remembered it. They also asked me how long I was going to be out of the USA and next time I leave please let them know in advance. I thought that was a great thing because it would help prevent credit card theft happening to me.

*rubs chin* I don’t think paying with cash/checks would help…checks are just as easy to screw someone over with. I have never had this problem (knock on wood), and hope I never will, but I’ve noticed that people are just getting more and more wretched the worse the economy gets. I’m the inventory control manager at the store I work for – so I’m in charge of running all the cycle counts (taking inventory). There’s been a definite hike in theft since things got bad, believe me. It’s pretty sad. What’s even sadder is that I work for a store that does not sell anything that anyone cannot live without.
The only time I’ve ever had an account of mine hacked into was my ebay account – someone got on there and tried to sell some exercise equipment under my name. Ebay caught it right away. I’m pretty sure it was my own fault – I suspect I received an email that looked a lot like something official from ebay and foolishly clicked whatever link was in there to go check on my account or something along those lines. I haven’t used a link from an ebay email since. I just go to the website and look in My Ebay at my messages…that way, I know for sure whether it’s official. Same thing with any emails from my bank, my credit card, etc. I also avoid purchasing from any websites that are for anything other than a well-established company. If it’s something for sale on a website that tickles my spider-sense even the slightest, well…whatever it is I’m wanting is probably also available on ebay or amazon. 😀
Oh, and I also use long, weird passwords with several random capital letters and some numbers thrown in. I try to use a different one on every site (although I have to write them down so I don’t forget them)! The other thing I do to be safe on the internetz is use Firefox with the NoScript add-on. It’s great. 🙂 Blocks almost every internet annoyance you can think of, too.

Kalandra, I am sooooo sorry you are dealing with something like this 🙁 🙁 🙁 What a pain in the rump, for sure! Seems like this kind of thing is happening more and more frequently – I am glad your hubby should be able to get to the bottom of it, and the responsible people will get their due in the end. It’s hard enough surviving todays economic situations, but then to have something stack ontop of it makes you want to pull your hair out! Here’s to wishing for a quick remedy and happier days ahead! ::snarl::: go get-em!

My daughter recently had a very small sum charged to her credit card, like $8.35 an odd number. We called immediately to disupte it, they CLOSED her account, and reopened another one (which didn’t help her credit rating since she’s just getting one started!)…… the next month the same company slipped a charge thru my husbands (mine too) account, we called and they reversed the charges and stated it was an ongoing investigation but didn’t close our account — totally unrelated credit cards BUT it was some type of online company.

Guess all this means is what we think is safe, may not be, kind of like my bank stock. :/

                        ::HUGS::

I guess I have just been lucky…never had my info stolen. I have had my bank turn off my card when I went to Bulgaria and Romania and when I went to Ohio but I was actually there so turning off my card didnt do anything but piss me off… now they have to call me before they turn off my money. Sorry you are going thru this. That really bites.

*sits next to Kalandara* They just got me, too, sista! 😡 Thankfully, my CC will take care of everything. Guess what the straw was that broke the camel’s back……the new trio of dragons! Thanks Windstone, for helping my CC catch this early enough to avoid total disaster. 😀 They did sneak a couple of charges in, but nothing like they could have!

Again I say, people suck. 👿
