I haven’t actually seen that many repaints, come to think of it. Maybe I just haven’t been on the forum long enough, but I can only think of a few –
Kyrin’s Sun Dragon, PurpleCat’s Emperor, that pink bunch (forgot who owns them), the young dragon mmloda currently has for sale on ebay, and I swear I saw a koi oriental once (I think Kyrin said Whippetluv did it). Then, of course, there’s the mysterious ‘Red’ set mentioned on Astral Castle’s encyclopedia…but where else have you guys seen them? Repaints, that is. Not the elusive Reds. XD Which I’m also curious about – have any of you actually SEEN those? Or are they just rumor? There are quite a few out there, that’s for sure!
To be fair, I think if repainting things is going to start to cause problems like this, perhaps we as collectors just shouldn’t do it, period, as a courtesy to Windstone, regardless of the language they use to ask us not to. We shouldn’t give them a reason to have to tell us to cease and desist.
That’s what we have PYOs for.

“Discouraging” repaints leaves room for folks to do it anyway and when they come up on hard times, the repaints are usually the first to go.
I understand the compulsion, but if it’s becoming this kind of problem, maybe they should just nix the wiggle room of the word ‘discourage’.
I concur! Especially if it affects the work that you do… The repaints are magnificant sometimes, but it’s not worth your job.
It’s (currently) not that big of a problem.. it’s just A Problem. And as far as I understand, there is nothing illegal (in terms of rights) about repaints, unless they start looking like an existing Windstone paint job. So, at best currently, all they can do is discourage and explain why they are discouraged.

My art: featherdust.comMarch 31, 2008 at 5:47 pm #684837I’ll be curious to see how the repairs proceed. This is the most badly-broken Emperor I’ve seen get repaired, and frankly he looks like the nightmarish imaginings I had the last time I bought an Emperor on eBay (who, thankfully, arrived OK). The arc of that tail just looks like it’d be a royal pain to stabilize!
March 31, 2008 at 6:01 pm #684838…Just so I don’t seem like a jerk, I wanted to say/add I really applaud how you fix these guys Kyrin!! 🙂

My art: featherdust.comMarch 31, 2008 at 6:13 pm #684839You don’t sound like a jerk Jen. You’re just reminding us of the fact that Windstone discourages repaints for a wide variety of reasons which is part of your “job” as a moderator here on the forum.

Thanks, and I would never think you were being a jerk.

I’m in the process of fixing a broken one myself, and he has very similar damage when it comes to the legs and tail. My advice is that you’ll have to work fast when retexturing the large areas. Even though ApoxieSculpt doesn’t set up right away, there’s a small window between when it’s plastic enough to work with and when it starts to crack and gain a crumbly appearance. I hope you don’t have to repaint him either! Melody was nice enough to send me a sample of the peacock paint so I can patch mine up, I’m sure if you ask she’d do the same for you. Best of luck!
The trick with large areas that need retexturing is you do it in small sections. That’s what I did with the White Male that didn’t have a face, it took days of labor, but he got rebuilt. To date, I have never had a problem with the AS crumbling, but then I usually don’t mess with it for long after it starts setting up hard.
As for repainting him…well that is my evil plan, he was never slated to stay Peacock. He will also be Never For Sale.

Apoxie Sculpt is what I use, it’s pretty nifty…it’s a two part epoxy medium that you mix in equal parts, it sticks to anything just about, and hardens up solid in about 4 hours or so. In the duration before it sets up it is very much like a clay and can be sculpted quite easily. When it hardens it doesn’t shrink and is easily painted over, it is also waterproof.
The White dragon had his whole face sheered off, and the pieces were tossed, so I had to rebuild him from scratch from the bridge of the nose down. Good thing I had a male dragon of my own to study so I could.

Yeah, you did an extremely awesome job! I know who to contact if I ever had damages on my dragons. 🙂
