Heehee, no offense.
But if you have a mac and have really liked it, go ahead and mention how it works for you. A mac is still a computer and I have not had one in forever! the last one I had was the Macintosh II. Talk about Dino PC.April 28, 2010 at 4:20 am #813150ok! then i will say that macs are super awesome 8) i don’t do a TON of painting with it, but i’ve never had a problem. that’s about as in depth as it gets for my recommendation 😳 yes, i am that technically challenged!
and i am hoping that i haven’t just jinxed myself and my macbook dies tomorrow. 🙄
April 29, 2010 at 3:11 am #813151It’s always nice to have a computer that works for you 🙂
Have any one purchased from Tigerdirect before? I’ve browsed the store a few times and entered some of thier contests but I have never baught anything from them. I’m checking out their barebones kits, that seem to be a pretty good deal.

Uses a mac and Painter. She does have problems with painter crashing unexpectedly, but she is using an macbook that is a few years old. The screen also has very poor color accuracy, which has given her serious problems in the past when printing things to a physical media. Koishii, you can see what I mean here. In this image, on her screen, the background behind the characters is a uniform black with trees and a night sky. On my color calibrated screen, it has obvious patches of a dark teal-ish color. She can’t see these on her screen at all and if she were to have it printed as-is she’d have problems. Again this may or may not be related to age– I don’t know enough about macs to guess.
HOWEVER! She is happy enough with it though that she plans on getting a new one. That should speak for itself. 😀
Personally I have used macs and I loathe them, but that is only personal preference. Just how some artists might love watercolors while others hate them! Just make sure whatever you get it is for you. 🙂

My art: featherdust.comApril 29, 2010 at 5:00 pm #813153I remember seeing that image, I thought it was a WIP! The same color blobs show up on my lap top screen.
Thanks! Once I figure out what is going to fit me best then I will do some more looking into screens, but I am definately glad to have this information on hand. It has helped a lot to look at what is currently out and make sense of if it is what will fit what I need or not. I’m going to stay away from macs because I am wanting something I can work on myself, replace parts as needed or upgrade. There definately are a lot of artists I know that use macs and I’ve heard the newer ones are a lot more artist friendly.
April 29, 2010 at 6:45 pm #813154Just putting my two cents in.
Stay clear of gateway, they are awful. They are just an EMachine with a different name and price tag. I also heard they are going under (and with good reason).I don’t like HP products either. Just my experience with them. My desktop is an HP. However, it is 8 years old and, although so slow you want to commit suicide, it does still work.
I have two laptops. My old one is a dell. It still works, but I found it to be too slow for now-a-days (it’s several years old). Only reason why I bought a new one. Dells can take damage if we’re talking about my experiences. Mine had been dropped so many times… and once from a height of 4 feet (with the screen open and system on. Thanks dog). Screen blacked out until a friend of mine hit it a few times (lol) and it came back. So, they seem to be very good, damaging wise.
My current laptop is an Asus. I went with asus because they supply parts to other computer companies (I know mac uses some of their stuff, and so does dell and many others), so why not go right to the source. So far, great computer. The only problem it has is sometimes warcraft. Sometimes it will freeze if I tab out of it. But I don’t play it much anymore, so it really isn’t a problem to me. I don’t art anymore, really, but painter and photoshop never lag on it.
Oh, I’ve dropped the asus on tile floor before, no damage to the casing or internal.Oh, I hate macs and would never in my life spend that much money on such a general piece 🙂 I’m not paying $2000 for a mac when I can get a pc for $600 with way BETTER specs than a mac. Nope. Hate them with a fiery passion. (My families first computer was a mac, and most of my college computers were macs. So I’ve had plenty of time on them).
Also, I have a hardcore mac friend. She has mac EVERYTHING. Well, she needed to buy a new computer (because of how many issues she had with her mac)… and swore never to buy a mac again. She bought a pc and said she’d never go back to mac again 😀
Oh, and mac computers break like nobodies business. Lots of unhappy friends with mac computers lol. Most of them have since gone to pcs.Hope that helps something!
edit: I remember reading something about the best, and worst computers to buy. I can’t remember all of them… but the best computers to buy that I remember were asus, sony and toshiba and the worst to buy were gateway, acer, and emachine. Ones like dell and hp were in the middle.

I bought my parents a computer (refurbished) there some years ago. I was very happy with the transaction and computer, and my parents still use it to this day. However, that was my one and only time I ever bought from them, and I have no idea if they provide consistently good service and products, or I was just lucky. My brother who builds gaming computers for himself and friends buys from micro center, but I can’t vouch for that company myself.
