Ah I so can’t believe I did this… again
I built a new server, just a small one to host Teamspeak servers. I took it down to the data center this morning, put it in the rack, configured it, networked it, going good. I’m parked in a loading zone so I take off home to finish setting it up.
I get home and the first thing I need to do is configure the firewall so that only my network can access the “high level” portions of the server. Well I goofed on the IP address and ended up locking myself out of the server.
Now I have to go down there after I close the cafe and punch in one lousy command at the terminal to get my access back. It’ll take longer to park and wait for the elevator, get out two sets of keys, proxy card, etc.
I did this once before with the old webserver, but I ended up locking out ALL access to the machine so it stopped serving web pages too. Man, that was a bad night. Back in the day when I was still learning π

lol no sooner said one of the network operations guys at the data center emails me and said he went into my cage and fixed it. Yay, now I can give this server to the customer tonight 8)

But I’m a web hosting deity, I’m not supposed to screw up.
April 5, 2007 at 7:40 am #558851Then why on earth did you post about it? π It’s like the trick to good archery: When you’re aiming for the apple and hit the plum, pretend that’s what you meant to do… or just don’t say anything at all…. um… that didn’t make any sense, did it? Maybe I should go to sleep.
Point is, everyone screws up, even deities. Just usually they don’t say anything about it on a public forum.

Confession is good for the soul?
If I was perfect, you couldn’t afford me? (Man I used that one on my old government boss all the time, I know she hated it)
Actually I prefer to admit my mistakes, to show that I am human. If I crash a server, I feel guilty enough, never mind covering it up and saying “Oh damn the network must have been down”. I don’t buy that.
April 5, 2007 at 5:29 pm #558853Well glad it worked out. And no one is perfect. There are people who think they are, but everyone makes mistakes.
April 6, 2007 at 12:04 am #558854To be perfect would be devine, but to err now and again is human. π
While hiding somewhere in my head I'm on the lookout for white oriental dragons! Please let me know if you know of any available. Thank you!
