My younger sister told me yesterday about a new proceedure they have for declawing cats. Supposedly, it kills the root of the claw so it doesn’t grow back, while leaving the last digit (the digit from which the claw grows) intact. Like on people, if you have a toenail that gets constantly ingrown, they can remove the nail and kill the root so it does not ever grow back. Again though, this is just something my sister told me, that she heard from a friend, so I don’t know if it is something they really do or not.
September 23, 2007 at 12:00 pm #619422I made an appointment with his vet for monday so I’ll see what they have to say. Ever since my husband has been away and I haven’t been home much the cat has taken to kneeding on me. If he does this to hubby he is sure to scratch him. I’m going to pick up the soft paws today and give it this week to see how well they work. He loves to groom his feet so I think he will chew them right off but I hope I’m wrong. My mom offered to take him for awhile after danny gets home but she hates animals and will abuse him. Hopefully the vet will have some ideas on what I can do so I don’t have to declaw.
September 24, 2007 at 2:42 pm #619423I just got back from the vet and I had to leave my cat there so they could put the soft paws on him for me. They are going to do all 4 paws for $30. I don’t think I could manage to get them on by myself so I figure I’ll have them do it and as they fall off I should be able to replace them ok. The vet did tell me that they do laser declawing and she would do all 4 paws but thats only because I have a medical reason for it to be done. I told her that is the last thing I want to do and I hope the soft paws work. She said I may need to replace one or two over the next week or two. The only problem is my cat loves to groom his paws and I fear he will chew them off. I just hope the soft paws work.

September 24, 2007 at 5:51 pm #619425I hope the soft paws work out for you!
I clip both my cats’ nails every two weeks, and they’re pretty short, but they can still scratch with them.
September 25, 2007 at 1:57 am #619426I just put soft paws for the first time on my new kitten. She was upset for about 30 minutes and she quit trying after that.
The rubber is fairly thick, so they are hard to chew off.
It is only about $7 for 40 soft paws in the ebay stores, so it is worth learning to do it yourself. It is not that big of a deal.
September 25, 2007 at 9:49 am #619427I had the vet do it for the first time because I don’t have the time or manpower to put them on right now. I figure this way I only have to replace them as they fall off instead of trying to do all paws by myself. He tried to get them off for about an hour after I got him home but it looks like he gave up. Its funny because he clicks when he walks on my hardwood floor downstairs. Reminds me of having a dog. I did talk to the transplant nurse that told my husband to declaw the cat yesterday. She seems a little clueless about what she was saying. She told me to only do the front paws and I told her he can still scratch with the back. She just gave me a puzzled look. So it looks like the soft paws will work and no declawing for kitty /jumpsforjoy!
