Hey,
I have been hearing more and more about cracking paint or clear coat on lap dragons. I was wondering if this is a recurring issue with laps and if anybody else had heard or noticed cracking over time.I have a peacock lap with cracking clear coat over the tail and neck scales, and after looking have noticed it seems most often with peacock laps, although I have not heard of this on any other pieces…
I have also noticed the cracking has seemed to spread a tiny bit during the time I have had it. Don’t get me wrong, I love my lap dragon and would never sell or get rid if it, I was just curious how many others have had issues with this. I doesn’t really seem to noticeable on mine, but it is is only on small areas of mine.

It’s not really noticeable unless I’m really examining the fledge/on top of it, but it seems to be hit or miss as to whether a piece develops this over time (windstone, pyo, or otherwise). It’s something to do with the sealant and seems to affect different sealants, but the conditions that produce this don’t appear to be cut and dry or mean 100% this will happen or this will not happen. :
July 8, 2013 at 7:52 pm #899567I have a few PYOS as well from Koishii and grayfire with some crazing as well. I don’t mind it really. I think it gives a nice crackle effect and adds chatacter. The only official piece I have I have it on is my White Male Dragon down his chest. I don’t think it is something specific to Laps more so as just an issue with certain kinds of clearcoat. Many things such as humidity or just simple incompatibliity with paint and sealers can cause all sorts of issues from pitting, crazing, bubbling, and yellowing.

July 9, 2013 at 12:55 am #899572This is the first time I remember seeing this, and I don’t have a clue what caused it. We had used the same clear coat for twenty years and I don’t remember experimenting with anything new until recently. We are now using a different clear coat that we feel is superior to the old product, and I know that this switch was too recent to include any of the old Peacocks. Our archived and personal pieces don’t get any direct sun. Could it be long term sun exposure?

This has been noticed for a few years. I took photos of a young oriental some years ago with crazing in the finish and posted them here / sent them to Melody. Since then many have come forward with random pieces showing this crazing over the years. There does not seem to be any particular cause… some were kept in high humidity areas of the country. Some in very arid areas. Some in high temperatures and some in low. Some have gone through temperature extremes and others have not. I can tell you mine was kept carefully and never exposed to sunlight or UV from a fluorescent source. It really seems random.

My art: featherdust.comJuly 11, 2013 at 5:22 pm #899828That’s interesting. There’s something a little weird going on with my silver old warrior, too. Not cracking, but a weird texturing on a few parts of him. I’m not sure how to describe it other than that these areas are “rough.” I noticed it the first time I dusted him, I think. I don’t really worry about it because it’s definitely not noticeable on display. I’ve taken great care of him and there’s been absolutely no sun exposure, so it’s kind of odd. I figured it was some kind of minor issue with the clear coat/sealant/whatever, either the way it was applied or with the stuff itself.
I have noticed on the pieces that have exclusively or a lot of metallic pigment will have a very slight pebbly texture to them. Perhaps it is how the paint coats the piece, especially if it is applied thickly.
If you are talking about actual rough, almost sandpapery feel… especially behind the neck/in crevices such as inside the tail coils, this occurs during airbrushing. I do not really know how to combat it. Where the airbrush cannot flow directly into an area such as between the back of the neck and wings, the paint develops a sandpapery texture. The finishing spray does the same. It might have something to do with how the tiny airborne particles of paint/sealer “fly” into these areas more sparsely.

My art: featherdust.comJuly 14, 2013 at 12:00 am #900005Thanks for responding to that, Jennifer. I think it’s the latter. It’s really not a huge problem, but it sure is nice to have an explanation! I didn’t know what the heck was up with it.
