Call me old fashioned, but when someone buys something it’s rude to offer to buy it from them, probably before they ahve even recieved the item in the mail!…If they wanted to sell it, they would do so in their own way! Sounds like my kids begging for a bite of a cookie of mine after I just gave them their own cookies lol. I would never do that to someone! How rude!

I think it’s all in how you say it. I think there’s absolutely nothing wrong with contacting someone and being polite about asking, with no pressure: “Listen, I really love that piece that you got recently, and I just wanted you to know that if you decide you don’t like it or ever need to sell it, I’d absolutely love to buy it from you!”
Imagine, in your cookie scenario: “Hey mom, I really love that cookie that you have! If you end up not liking it, I’ll gladly take it!”

Please visit My Webpage to see my art and PYO's that I've done in the past!July 10, 2011 at 9:49 pm #850698I agree with Hannah but I don’t think that’s what has been happening at all. You can tell by the tone of some of the recent “want to buy” threads that popped up after Pam made this thread.
It’s disappointing. I’d love to see people post photos of their ebay pieces in the brag thread regularly so we could congratulate them and see adorable photos all at once. But very few people do. Same with the grab bag unicorns recently.

This is especially disappointing for me! I want to continue adding to the Grab Bag Directory but I’ve seen very few things pop up on the forum for quite a while. I realize this is partially due to the fact that most of the unicorns have been accounted for, however – I hope people know that if they would like their pictures to be included in the Directory that I can and will add them without revealing who their owners are!

^This! This!^ I wish everyone could be comfortable posting pics of their eBay collections and grab bags. I love to see what they look like sitting in a home! I enjoy looking at pictures of other people’s collections as much as I enjoy looking at my own collection! <3
July 11, 2011 at 4:29 am #850722In answer to Pam’s question yes, I would prefer it if Windstone made the auctions private. I stopped leaving feedback quite awhile ago because I knew people were tracking my wins and I thought it was through the feedback. I did not realize they could also do it through Windstone’s feedback for me. The idea of people tracking my wins just makes me uncomfortable. eBay is supposed to be anonymous and figuring out who bought what to me is an invasion of privacy.
I have been contacted by a couple of forum members about certain items. I do want to be very clear that the people who contacted me were very polite and basically said “if you decide to sell please keep me in mind.” I am NOT upset or angry at them at all and are keeping them in mind if I do decide to sell the pieces. Unfortunately the pieces involved are some of my favorite and I would probably sell almost everything else before them. (Sorry) Also those particular pieces I believe I posted on the forum that I had won them so they did not need to track me on eBay. So once again I just want to let the people who have contacted me know that I am not and was not upset about being contacted.
I think posting on a thread “I would be interested in buying xyz so please keep me in mind” is fine. But I think adding anything that could be considered emotional blackmail or trying to make the buyer feel guilty crosses the line. Although I realize this might be difficult to enforce because what is too much to say? There is “I really love this piece and it makes me smile” and then there is ” I need this piece because I just lost my job, my boyfriend left and took my dog, my car just died, my cable is out and I need to talk to Comcast (horrors!) and buying this piece is the only thing keeping me going.” 🙂 I really hope no one has a week like that although I have had a few weeks where I was afraid to say ” well at least it can’t get any worse!” because it could get worse – and sometimes did. So I think keeping the WTB request simple and polite is the best way to go.
July 11, 2011 at 2:39 pm #850727I think in addition to the short, polite “if you ever decide to sell please keep me in mind” something along the lines of “hey congratulations, that’s gorgeous!” type of thing would be nice. I mean who would want to post photos of their new ebay piece for every single reply to be pleas to purchase the piece.
Ddvm, I know what you mean about the emotional blackmail. It’s annoying to read, I can imagine it would be way more annoying to be on the receiving end.
July 11, 2011 at 6:26 pm #850737DDVM you bring up a good idea in your post – what if we had an official “WTB Specific Ebay Piece” thread? Something that maybe is stickied so it’s really easy for people to find, and hopefully helps to encourage open, public communication about items rather than attempting to find out who bought certain things on ebay. I know I’d certainly love to buy certain pieces that have come from ebay in the past that either I couldn’t get my hands on or are from quite a long time ago. I know we already have the wishlist thread but would anyone else like a thread that talks specifically about ebay pieces, probably recent ones?

That is a good idea, Hannah, as long as people use it properly and not as just another Wish List.
For example: There is a Labradorite Lap that sold for over $5,000 (no kidding) that I would love to have. Given its price, I would never buy it, even if I had the opportunity; so that would go on the “Wish” list and not a “WTB Specific eBay piece.”
July 11, 2011 at 8:46 pm #850745I like this idea. I have created a ‘want to buy ebay pieces’ sticky in the flea market.
July 11, 2011 at 8:54 pm #850750Awesome! Thanks Pam 🙂
