I’m not an overly religious person, however my the Lord welcome everyone who met their end in this tragedy with open arms and may the Devil welcome the man who sent them there…
I’m not religious either but I gotta say…..AMEN!
December 19, 2012 at 2:43 am #890167To those blaming this to access to guns, what is to blame with the China school mass killing, the guy killed 22 children using a knife. Guns are not the problem in these kinds of crimes, people are. Add in that mental illness is very much not properly treated here in the US, & you really have a recipe for tragedy. On top of that, a lot of people with mental illness are not willing to get diagnosed or treated due to the stigma, society is pretty nasty to people who may have some kind of mental instability. I know people who refuse treatment or diagnosis who I know have mental issues, their reasons, they say they might not be able to get a job or be allowed to raise their children. And the saddest part of that, it’s true.
There will always be mad people out there who do these horrific crimes, part of it is how our society treats them, especially afterwards. They have their actions & name splashed all over the news on every channel & every newspaper, we shout their name & deeds to all & sundry, they are famous in minutes of their crime. This is part of their plan, a large part of it, & they get it. What we need to do is not announce their name, yes tell us what has happened, but only post the event, the people who were harmed & leave the person responsible without any acclaim, no acknowledgement of who they are, don’t make their name public knowledge, keep them obscure & unknown. This will help fight this kind of crime more than you know. Because it is that instant of fame, that is what motivated them to go out & kill as many people as they could before taking their own lives they were after. Take that away, maybe they will quietly take themselves out leaving innocent people be, while taking their own life will be tragic, it won’t be as bad as what this young man just did last Friday.
I don’t blame the accessibility of firearms, if a crazy person wants to kill a bunch of people, he will find a way, there are hundreds of tools for mass murder out there, some of which are far easier to get a hold of than a gun. If you are crazy enough to consider killing a lot of innocent people for no other reason than to make a name for yourself & for your own amusement, then you will use anything. Guns just make a handy scapegoat, since our government is hellbent on taking away our 2nd Amendment, I call into question the timing & motive of these events, as the Connecticut shooting was not the only shooting to occur over this last week. I wonder if these unstable individuals were encouraged to do this to make the public scream for the government to take our guns from us & of course since they were killed or killed themselves, no one would know who or what influenced them. I notice the president was sure quick to make a speech, where he said nothing when Hurricane Sandy smashed through the east coast. Very interesting, no?
Food for thought people.
Bottom line, there is nothing we can do to stop people from doing these things, all we an do is hope it doesn’t happen & to honor the people lost. Offer our love & support to those grieving & hope that the next crazy is stopped before he is able to do something like this again. I can’t help but think that if Viki Soto had had a handgun, after she hid her students, she might have been able to stop the shooter before he got to that next classroom where he killed so many. She still might have died, but her death wouldn’t have been without meaning.
December 19, 2012 at 2:50 am #890169Firearm control has been mentioned twice now, and I just want to gently remind everyone that political topics are off limits here.
If you are concerned about that issue or one of the many others surrounding tragedies like this, please seek other, more appropriate forums to discuss them on.
Do not use tragedy as our media does– as a sounding board for politics and drama!!
Let us focus instead our sympathy on the victims and their families, and what good we can bring to the world individually in the spirit of trying to help.

Sorry Jennifer, one of those was me and I was really just curious what the rules in Connecticut, not for political, just for curiosity’s sake. I’m in Canada we have federal gun control.
December 19, 2012 at 5:11 am #890175Sorry Jenn, someone else mentioned how guns should be controlled & it set me off. I hate how people use these kinds of events as a soapbox for gun control, guns have nothing to do with the problem.

Ah okay! You might find some laws regarding guns if you search for “Connecticut gun laws”… usually the Department of the state has them clearly outlined somewhere. I’d help but I only know NY laws very well.
It’s okay to share facts here, I just want to shy away from heated opinions! 🙂

My art: featherdust.comDecember 19, 2012 at 8:13 pm #890198I saw the report about the man in China with the knife, who attacked the 22 children. Apparently it became sort of a “fad” there in 2010, to attack schoolchildren with knives. I hope this is not a sign that the fad is returning. People are just….sick… Although, if its any consolation, none of the 22 children were killed, according to the reports I read.
December 19, 2012 at 10:24 pm #890206I know the subject is touchy. I’m in the middle of a facebook argument over gun control with a friend of mine. *shakes head*
Not too much that can stop a psychotic, gun or no gun in my opinion. *shrug* You can google how to make loads of weapons if you don’t have access to one.
I dunno, I just think the world as a whole needs to improve to keep these things from happening. If every one single person all over the world did just one single good deed, I think that would send out the morale burst to get us going in that direction. It might sound silly, but I have been trying to be a better person since my boyfriend and I had a impass in our relationship about 6 months ago and we decided we BOTH could be better people and just from us being kinder to eachother, it has in turn made us kinder to others.

I don’t want to get too heavy, but my mom works directly with special needs children exactly as this, and the lady that wrote that article is not exaggerating, nor is her experience with her son uncommon. Mom tells me that there are at least two kids even in our very small district that she expects will be in the news one day for violent crime, and there is little she can do. We need a better way to deal with this complex problem, but I will be the first to admit that I am not sure what the answer is.

The first step is accepting that having a mental illness is just like having high cholesterol or asthma: it’s a disease, something that needs to be treated. Just like leprosy – having it doesn’t mean you’re bad, or evil, or whatever – you’re just sick. Depression might be one of the most common ones, on that a lot of people have experienced at least once in their lives. In Ontario, we’re starting to see and hear more about mental illness; people are opening up about it, and I think it will help in the long run. But it’s an extremely long process.
