Looking for a bit of help…
Okay, I’m decent with computers. I can open computers up to add things/upgrades, I’ve been told to get a job involving computers, and almost always I can fix something on a computer when something goes wrong… but this has baffled everyone I’ve asked that knows a lot about computers.
It started several days ago. I was logged out of my yahoo email account (you know how they have that 14 days of being logged in, well, I had just redone that a few days earlier so I was kicked much sooner than normal). When I tried to log in, it brings me right back into the log in page, like I had simply refreshed the page. No matter how many times I try to log in, this happens.
Same with here. Whenever I try to log into Windstone, it logs me in, giving me the confirmation type page, but the second I click elsewhere it logs me out.Catch is, livejournal and gmail work fine… as does warcraft (no doubt because that’s not a web browser).
It’s obviously not the websites themselves because since it’s been doing that, I’ve been using my father’s computer to check those (and here I am on it now). I also have my own desktop computer, and the websites work fine on that one as well.
I’ve tried clearing my cookies, cache, history and everything. Nothing. I’ve tried cleaning my system registry for any errors. Nothing. Scanned for virus’ and any malware/spyware. Nothing. I’ve even system restored my computer to a week BEFORE all this started happening, and nothing.
I’m so frustrated about it :/ I feel that wiping my system might be the only way the fix this problem… while wiping the system is more annoying than hard, I would still rather avoid it since it also takes a lot of time having to transfer my data and programs onto a portable harddrive then back again… I’ve got way too much stuff to worry about and do right now without having to add that @___@
Does anyone know why this might be happening? I didn’t do anything out of the norm when this started happening. And I only visit the same, maybe 5 pages each day, so it can’t caused by anything like that.
My laptop is mine alone. I don’t have anyone sharing it, and no one uses it other than me. It’s been like that for the last 3 years, the whole 3 years I’ve owned it from brand new.
July 21, 2009 at 4:33 pm #776478Wow that’s a toughie. Afraid I can’t be much help but I’d be curious to know what it is, if you ever solve the mystery.
Do you use IE for your browser or Firefox? At least re-installing Firefox is a cinch.
July 21, 2009 at 5:38 pm #776479Sorry Kuj, wish I could help… *I’m so computer illiterate it’s not even funny – you wouldn’t want my sort of help!

July 21, 2009 at 7:01 pm #776480I’ve never heard of that, I’m sorry I can’t be of help. I hope you get it fixed. Does this log-in problem happen on all of your browsers, or just one?
July 21, 2009 at 9:29 pm #776481Warp10 says to check the cookie blocks under Privacy in the Internet tools. Some sites need third party cookies and those might be marked as blocked.

I use firefox. I haven’t uninstalled it yet… maybe I should try that…

Hmm… I’ve reset all my cookies, but there is a chance that maybe my internet security is too high? I’ll go see if this works… although my security options have always been high (paranoid of that kind of stuff).
July 21, 2009 at 10:01 pm #776484Okay, clearing cookies didn’t work… and neither did lowing my internet security and cookie options.
I now have reason to believe that it is Firefox! I went onto Internet Explorer… and while it wouldn’t sign me into Yahoo due to not being allowed to take cookies (which it said in red letters… it didn’t just “reload” the page)… I WAS able to sign into Windstone with IE.
But now I’m having an issue. Firefox won’t let me uninstall it. Going into the system panel and trying to uninstall it, it won’t go. Click on “uninstall” and the whole control panel window phases out for a slit second before coming back. That’s it. I can’t uninstall it.
I tried to reinstall it (or rather update it) without uninstalling it, but it didn’t fix the problem.
I might have to safe mode the computer and then see if I can uninstall it… we’ll see…July 21, 2009 at 10:02 pm #776485Don’t know about Firefox. We use Explorer, so the privacy stuff might be different. Worth a shot, though!

http://www.sarahjestin.com/feedbacklists.htmJuly 21, 2009 at 10:27 pm #776486Okay, it officially seems to be firefox :/ I had to safe mode to uninstall it… and I can log in just fine to both yahoo and windstone using IE on my laptop. It’s just strange because my fathers computer and my desktop both have firefox and they both work. I might have to filehippo an older version of firefox and see if it will work… oh what a hassle! I guess this is good to know for anyone using firefox… if this ever happens…
July 21, 2009 at 10:41 pm #776487Well… looks like I’ll be using Google Chrome from now on 😕 😕 Something has gone wrong somewhere in my firefox and if I can’t fix it by uninstalling and reinstalling… guess, at least for the time being (if it ever gets fixed?) I’ll be using Chrome.
Thank you everyone for all the help and advice. Had not, I probably would have done the wipe… only to probably have it not help :X I would have never guessed it was firefox itself… since I’ve never had anything go wrong with it.July 22, 2009 at 6:28 am #776488😆 Glad my blind shot in the dark was of some help!
July 22, 2009 at 6:29 am #776489AnonymousBoth Firefox and Chrome had a couple of exploits come out this week and neither have been patched yet. The 3.5 tree is vunerable, and so is <3.0.11. They put out 3.0.12 today, but not 3.5.2 yet.
