I’m noticing that the ebay items lately have mostly been very dark, like black emerald, black violet, black this and that. The backgrounds on the pictures are so dark that the pictures are difficult to distinguish from the background, everything is just dark. I know it’s winter and dark outside until late, I’m wondering if the background on the dark pieces could be lightened up so they stand out more and could we get some lighter more cheerful pieces? (now my wallet is talking: no! no more temptations, it’s hard enough as it is! dark is less tempting! Me: well, at least some light background on the dark ones, ok? Me, the therapist is talking: Well, maybe Melody is depressed and can’t do light and cheerful right now, it’s hard in the dark and cold and she is used to sunny S. Cal. and plenty of sunshine. Me: Well, I decided to bring it up anyway, just to let her know I noticed and I hope she feels better, spring is really coming, honest it is and the sunshine will return to us! Take care, Melody! P.S. other forum members have commented on it too, especially the dark backgrounds being somewhat gloomy. Just thought I’d mention it.
February 8, 2011 at 4:25 am #837780I may be a minority, but I love the dark, rich colored stuff that’s been put out lately 😳
Commission spots are currently closed! Please message me for details.
Please visit My Webpage to see my art and PYO's that I've done in the past!February 8, 2011 at 4:40 am #837781I like most every color, dark and light; but I would like to see just what I am bidding on. Not a dark blob on a dark background. 🙄 On the other hand, I would likely bid higher if I could actually see the piece, so I suppose that is a plus. 😛
February 8, 2011 at 5:53 am #837782I have noticed with a lot of the pieces that i can’t really see much of their color detail in the black background photos. They still look a million times better than my pictures. But I have seen some forum member using grey background light boxes that really make the piece pop and make it so you can see the fine detail in the paint. Maybe the factory could try something like that. Even with the dark background i still love most of the pieces 😀

It’s a minority of two at least! 😀

You are right, we should have a lighter background to show the outlines of the black creatures.. I’ll mention this to John and Pam, the photographers. I have seen them placing reflective things around the black animals to try to shine some light on them so they don’t disappear against the background entirely. I don’t know if the background is so easy to change though, but maybe we can find a lighter thing to use, like silver velvet or something.
No, it isn’t dark and gloomy here! It has actually been bright and sunny lately, unlike the most of the country! Weird.
No, not depressed! 😀 The various dark pieces are a coincidence, I tend to get on a theme and paint several pieces at a time in the same general color range. When I was able to have enough ebay pieces painted in advance, Pam would mix them up to give variety, but lately I’ve been painting just enough ebay stuff to stay a day or two ahead of her!
I’ve been on an Okapi kick lately, and they are dark animals! I did paint some lighter brown ones too.
I just painted some black griffin chicks too… ha ha ! You must think I’m mental.February 8, 2011 at 6:47 pm #837785I’d suggest good dark grey (although still dark) which should help as a background cloth color, while still looking professional. I’d go with a shade and color similar to the post background here on the forums. I’ve had problems with that myself…….darker colors are such a pain to photograph!
February 8, 2011 at 11:51 pm #837786While it is a struggle to get the dark pieces to show against the black background there are a couple of reasons why we do it that way. The main one is that the colors are just richer when shown on black instead of a lighter gray and the second is that I want to maintain consistency in the way the pictures are shot and appear on Ebay so there is less confusion as to what is a Windstone auction and what isn’t.
A big factor, which we try to compensate for but can’t control, is the quality of the display on someone else’s monitor. We try our best to get a bright enough image for a poor monitor but some dark colors come out pretty muddy no matter what we do, and we have to take these pictures pretty quickly. I (or Pam) might spend 10 minutes on six views of an Ebay piece whereas I might spend half an hour or more getting a shot that I think suitable for a catalog cover or ad. In both cases the dark pieces take longer to set up and light than the white or more neutral pieces. The worst are the pieces that are both black and white.
