For those of you who dont know, you MUST have the mailing box and packing materials if you are going to claim insurance for a broken item. If you do not, getting an item insured is just a waste of money.
March 31, 2008 at 4:38 pm #494901March 31, 2008 at 4:39 pm #685025I knew that. Who doesn’t!!!
Thanks for posting though Ski. 🙂Edit: Ooops, just saw your flea market thread!!! 😳
March 31, 2008 at 4:41 pm #685026I only know that now because I had a claim and didn’t bring the box and packing material. So I had to make a second trip with it. But I didn’t know before my experience.
March 31, 2008 at 4:44 pm #685027I’ve not had to file a claim myself (almost did, but decided not worth it), but I knew from reading everyone else’s experiences (and the research I did before deciding it wasn’t worth it) that you need all the packaging (inner and outer) to file the claim.
March 31, 2008 at 5:08 pm #685028Bah I voted for the wrong one! I ment to say I already knew it 🙁
March 31, 2008 at 5:12 pm #685029Way to mess up my Poll Purple!! 😆 Just kidding! I figured it was common knowlege… esp in a group like this. But there is always one, and if I can save that one from future heartache, then the post was worth it. 😉
March 31, 2008 at 5:15 pm #685030I’m sorry 😳 I’ve been up all night so I’ll blame it on that.

I was just playin 😉
March 31, 2008 at 5:17 pm #685032it’s actually the same with any shipping company…
USPS will sometimes keep all the package and things inside….
Fedex will come collect everything…and if the packaging was adequate will send you a check and the package within a week…
UPS will come look at it…and make a decision based on what the inspector says…
that’s the 3 major ones….but you have to have the original packaging (inner and outer) or most of the time they will not even bother with a claim…
March 31, 2008 at 5:20 pm #685033I had never really thought about it, so thanks for the info.
March 31, 2008 at 5:37 pm #685034I knew, but that’s because I already looked into it in the past (because I wasn’t aware of the rules at the time and would rather not be screwed over because I messed up). Though I’m really anal about stuff like that… I’d hang on to stuff until it was completely resolved, even if it wasn’t required, just in case. (I’m the type of person who hurries up and watches a DVD to make sure it’s not flawed before time runs out to return it… even if it’s a full-season boxset )
Though I’ve only been in that situation once (well, twice, but the 2nd instance wasn’t worth my time fighting about it), and luckily the seller was an absolute dream and I didn’t have to do anything but talk to him. Though I suspect it helped that I took out my camera as soon as I noticed evidence of damage and documented the whole unveiling. 😕
March 31, 2008 at 7:19 pm #685035I’ve never had to claim insurance on something personally, but I’ve sure had to start the process at work! I open the office mail a lot in the inter-library loan department… We get a lot of packers on the other end who seem to think pitching a CD or DVD case into a jiffy bag and dropping it in the mail will do the job, even when we specifically tell them how to pack, to the letter. Obviously, a tiny padded envelope knocking around in a truck with boxes and bags of books that can weigh up to 40 lbs. is not going to survive long. And while the debate over who pays damages rages, there are people waiting on the items they’ve requested 🙁 We usually win since we keep all packaging/broken pieces for evidence, but still… it’s a hassle.
