http://www.sarahjestin.com/feedbacklists.htmOctober 25, 2008 at 9:05 pm #737323Last Saturday, we went to a Chinese wedding. I’ll skip the ceremony (that we missed) and move on to the reception. My table comprised of Causisans (7 of us). The rest of the 200 or so people were Chinese. Boy, did we stick out!
I wanted to bring the menu home with me, but I forgot (I wasn’t feeling well, so my brain was a bit scattered).
We started with suckling pig and jellyfish. Yes, jellyfish. You know the sound you make when you chew raw carrots? Mix that with a rubber consistency and that’s what you get. The taste? None. It came with a super spicy sauce, and since I’m a total wimp when it comes to spices, I just had the jellyfish on its own. Other people at my table weren’t so adventurous. We laughed so hard at the faces others made looking at us eat, one of the guys turned pitch red!
We had crab cakes, prawns, fish, green bean leaves with mushrooms, the noodles and rices, which fits pretty much with what we’re used to as far as chinese food goes.
What came out of the comfort zone was the shark fin soup. The broth was rendered very gelatinous because of the cartilage. Warp10 said it reminded him of the clear runny nose stuff… needless to say he wasn’t allowed to repeat that particular comment in English. The soup was actually very good, but the lady sitting beside me just couldn’t swallow it.
Then came dessert. Ever had sweetened red bean soup-like pudding? I didn’t finish that one.
Anyway, all this to say we had a memorable evening! This was a coworker’s wedding, so we had a few people from work there. This week, when we say each other, we just said “jellyfish” and we burst out laughing!

This week, when we say each other, we just said “jellyfish” and we burst out laughing!Sounds like it was at least an ‘interesting time’ so to speak! I wish I were adventurous enough to eat something like that (I think the last time I tried something adventurous was when I had a seaweed salad… yuck….).
Although that last comment reminded me of a time when me and some friends, in highschool were arguing over whether cottage cheese was really cheese. I don’t know why… anyway, it ended up with one of the friends breaking in with “You’re not cheese!” We spent the rest of the day saying that to random people… got some interesting looks… 😆 Yes I was a nerd…
October 26, 2008 at 1:49 am #737325I’m Chinese so the banquet menu isn’t a surprise. I can’t stand the red bean dessert either. 😆
Though was a lot of fun trying to convince my bf and at the time, my brother’s gf that the Caucasians at the table were to eat the heads off all the animals (the chicken, lobster and fish are normally served with the heads, not attached, just on the plate with the rest of the meat). We told them that it was a great Chinese honour to our guests. Had them half convinced, then my cousin spoiled the whole thing. Yes, I’m mean, so what?? 😈
October 26, 2008 at 1:43 pm #737326Sounds like it was a fun time! Though I’m not entirely sure I’d be brave enough to try jellyfish….I’dve definately had plans to take a menu home too…sounds like fascinating food selection, if kinda strange.:D Did you take any pictures?

No, we left in a rush (I’ll spare you the details), so we didn’t think to bring a camera. The bride changed a few times and at one point had an absolutely stunning traditional Chinese wedding ensemble. I wish I had pics of that!
And Jasmine, if they had tried the head trick on us, I actually might have tried some! I’m so gullible…

October 27, 2008 at 6:37 am #737329That sounds like fun, Medley! I’ve had lots of seafood but never jellyfish.

Not while we were there. We left at 11:30 (Chinook was with us and falling asleep at the table).
