The carousel in Santa Cruz, CA is like that! That carousel is a national monument now.
I love that carousel. The ring game was such a good idea to combine with it! I always miss, but it’s still fun.
May 9, 2009 at 5:39 pm #764053I’ve only made it once. It’s harder than it looks!

Here is a few links to pics I searched up since this a very hard thing to photo…
It is the World’s largest Carousel at the House On a Rock located in Wisconsin. This is the most beautiful thing in the world to see! The whole house is fabulous, and if you search it you can read up on it. If you have been there, you never forget it, and if you like antiques, this is the place!
BTW there is NOT 1 single solitary plain old horse on this whole carousel. They line the walls in ranks. Every beast or figure has a mythical, and fantasy issue with it, that makes it not a horse, and not a human. The angles hanging from the ceiling are full sized mannequins with wooden wings.
If you ever decide to travel to Wisconsin to go to the Dells, then by all means make sure you have time to go to The House on a Rock and see the wonderful things there are to see there. (Shameless plug for another state’s vacation spot! 😀 )

Have you ever seen the one in Ocean City, NJ? The horses were all white, but they had real horse hair manes and tails, and they actually did the catch the brass ring, get a free ride thing. 8)They painted/restored the one on Casino Pier? That’s cool, I’m glad they are preserving it. The original carousel (The Illions Carousel) on Funtown Pier was sold by piece at auction in 1990. I don’t like the new modern one:( The original had real tails, too. It’s hard to even find pictures of it. I haven’t been to Seaside in ages, either. I went there on vacation every summer growing up. It seems so small and it’s gotten rather dumpy now. *sigh*
I’ve been on the one in Ocean City, too. My husband (at the time) even snagged the brass ring once. I almost fell over. We all got a free ride. 😀
May 21, 2009 at 2:12 am #764057Bump so Melody can see it. I am interested in this! 🙂

Do you mean REAL carousel creatures or model sized ones?
OH Yes I have thought about carving real ones but reality set in.
We have 3 antique carousel horses. I wish I could post a picture of them but 2 are still packed away somewhere. I love carousel animals!
We just went to visit the Albany Carousel project last week…http://www.albanybrassring.com/
I don’t have words to describe how wonderful that is! This is a carousel that is being carved entirely by volunteers ! It has over 60 animals on it! Oh man if I only I had some spare time!
I will try to post some pictures that Pam took while we were there. I forgot my camera.
The original group of animals was designed by Terryl Whitlatch! …which explains the quagga figure.May 21, 2009 at 7:58 pm #764059Wow! That is amazing! I love the quagga with the lemur. And the rabbit. Not to mention the zebra…ok, all the animals are really cool. Thanks for posting the link.
May 22, 2009 at 2:38 am #764060I think the quagga is just so cool! And the Chinook Salmon is just AWESOME in detail!!! 😀 Thanks for the link!
May 22, 2009 at 4:43 am #764061Wow, the detail of those animals is stunning. What a neat project!
May 22, 2009 at 12:58 pm #764062Wow! How very cool!
May 22, 2009 at 1:57 pm #764063Wow, those are beautiful! I wonder how long it took to carve and paint all of them! Thank you for the link!
May 23, 2009 at 12:14 am #764064Man, that carousel is SO COOL. I wish I’d gotten up to Albany to see it. Maybe you’d be willing to go again next time I come up to OR…? 😉 I want to see Quigga.
