The only other thing I ca think of is that he is so scared of the dogs that when he has to go he won’t come down stairs…..
Does he have a litter box upstairs so that he doesn’t have to go down where the dogs are when he needs to ‘go’?
June 5, 2009 at 2:23 pm #767239No, I don’t have a space for a litter pan upstairs.
June 5, 2009 at 7:41 pm #767240Ooh, I have space issues too in my apartment. It’s hard to figure out where to put the litter pan.
Is there any place you can put it, even temporarily? A bathroom upstairs? Any little corner? It may help alleviate the problem of him urinating everywhere, if he is too much of a fraidy cat to want to go brave the dogs to go potty. You might have to step over it a little more, but it would be preferable to urine spots all upstairs, right? And, if it does alleviate the issue, and he uses his pan like he should, it would be easier to find him a home.
It really sounds more and more like you’ve done everything you can to give him a good home, but he needs a very quiet environment, maybe where he is the only pet. You can’t beat yourself up for wanting to place him somewhere else. He may have had a serious trauma when he was younger which makes him less able to handle stress or an active home environment. That’s not your fault. I had two sister cats years back. We lost one rather early, probably due to coyotes, and Frisky came back very scuffed up. She was a happy cat before that, and after she lost her sister, she was never the same. She pretty much lived out the rest of her years in my closet.
June 5, 2009 at 7:44 pm #767241Um, he’s just spraying to mark his territory is what it sounds like to me. He’s upstairs, doggies are down and he says “This is my space” so he’s leaving his scent. 😕
June 5, 2009 at 7:58 pm #767242Heh heh, that iiiis kind of an obvious scenario Laurie, maybe he just plain thinks the dogs are jerks 😀
June 5, 2009 at 8:19 pm #767243my cats mark their personal spots all the time and with 10 cats it gets really old. 😡 😉
June 6, 2009 at 2:40 pm #767244Well, we found out the issue. Nothing medical. He suddenly stopped(for whatever reason) using the cat door 🙄 . We have a 2 story house plus a basement, and the cat food, ater and box are in the basement. Otherwise the dogs think its all a buffet :puke: . So, the damn cat was using the door just fine 2 weeks ago, but suddenly stopped. I’m tellig you guys I have NEVER had a cat so nuts! He just sits behind the cat door and cries(it’s behind our couch so we can hear him). The dogs can’t even get to the cat door, so why on earth did he stop using it??!! So not only as he peeing upstairs, he wasn’t eating or drinking. Good lord, now I really don’t know what to do for him. I hate the idea of him living on the basement all the time. On the other hand I can’t leave the actual door open or we have the doggie buffet issue again :shout:
June 6, 2009 at 6:43 pm #767245Aww, the poor boy! I don’t know why he would stop using the door  But I think he would be a LOT happier if you moved his food/water/litter box upstairs. I know you said you didn’t have space, and I know how you feel living in a one bedroom apt myself-but maybe you could rearrange and find a small bit of room? At one point I had a spare litter box in my bedroom because that was the only spot for it-lol Also, my bosses cats have their food/water up on a dry sink, so they jump up to get it. That way their dog can’t eat the food. (she would eat an entire bag if she could! lol) Hopefully if you can move some things that will solve his problems and you can keep him! Good luck!
June 8, 2009 at 2:12 pm #767246Poor kitty:-/ Maybe he got a paw or his tail caught in the door? We have a cat door and not many of my cats have gotten the hang of using it; they don’t like going through it. I hope you can think of a solution to your problem.
June 9, 2009 at 1:26 am #767247My cats never got the cat-flap concept. They couldn’t figure that thet could push the little door to get in and out – so I just took it off. I love my kitties, but sometimes they can be really numb! Maybe you can leave the flap part off of the door. Unless the dogs are small enough to get through to

Kimi figured out that you could go through the door. She was just scared she wouldn’t get back. Her covered litterpan is now without a door….. 🙄
June 9, 2009 at 2:48 am #767249Maybe they are afraid of this happening?
June 9, 2009 at 5:27 am #767250I had a dog staying here that thought the litter box was a buffet too, and he was a licky dog as well :puke: , I had to put the box up on a shelf, is that possible for you?
June 9, 2009 at 2:30 pm #767251I’m not sure what we will do. I think taking the door flap off the cat door is a good idea. My dogs are *hopefully* too big to fit, I’m worried about them trying to wedge thier heads in tho…I’m still wrestling with the fact that maybe this just isn’t the BEST home for the cat. If we didn’t have the dogs he would be happier, so part of me says he ought to have a different home. Then the other part feels badly about hurting my daughter by giving Joker away…. 😕
