It could be that the previous owners were feeding her the pellets mixed with seeds. Bunnies tend to get really fat on that since they prefer the seeds which have lots of fat in them. So try her on just straight pellets (1/8th cup per 5 lbs of bunny/day), free choice timothy hay (not alfalfa – too much calcium, bunnies tend to get calcium oxalate bladder stones) and veggies. No starch – no bananas or cheerios.
August 8, 2007 at 1:28 pm #594205Well, I had some good news and I wanted to share. I didnt really want to get this bunny, cuz I like to keep animals I get and knew I would have to give the rabbit up in a year when I went to the states. I was under the impression that we could only ship dogs and cats. Well, when I went to take my final, I stopped by the vet and asked, and they said it was no problem, and of course I could take the bunny to the states. I am very happy. Now I can buy that hutch I wanted to get for it!
Also, a bunny question: Do rabbits go into a heat, like dogs, or are they ready all the time? Also, how do they act? My female was acting a little wacko the other day… very affectionate, but I felt like she wanted to bite me… I picked her up and when I touched her belly, she started thumping her legs really fast. Is that “in heat” behavior, or is she just a bit nuts?
August 8, 2007 at 8:35 pm #594206I’m glad you get to keep your bunny!!! I wish I could help with your questions, but the only bunnies I have are wild ones that hop through our yard!!! 😀

Yes, rabbits go into heat. Thier privates get dark red and swollen. sometimes they will lay on thier tummies with thier tails up.
August 8, 2007 at 9:56 pm #594208Bunnies go into heat and are willing to mate but the really cool thing is that they are induced ovulators. Which means they don’t ovulate the egg until after mating occurs and the *ahem* appropiate genetic material is present in the tract from the male (don’t want to scar any young minds). It’s a highly effecient way of making sure the female gets pregnant. Cats are also induced ovulators which is why there are so many of them. Dogs are not so it is more hit and miss with them.

Thank you! Can you tell me how long it will last? She is just not gonna get any and I am hoping she will not act like this for long. Do they come into heat every 6 months, or more often?
August 9, 2007 at 4:35 pm #594211Oh, com’on Ski, baby bunnies are cute! 😀 (And if you ever try to catch them, just know that ther’re fast little suckers!)

August 31, 2007 at 1:17 pm #594214My spoiled little bunny got a new home today. I had been planning on it but had to wait till I had money. I went to get it today and it was on sale!!! Gotta love it! Plus 19% off for the Vat form 😀
August 31, 2007 at 1:20 pm #594215How cute! I just hope it doesn’t get loose and smash any Windstones…
August 31, 2007 at 3:26 pm #594216Wow, nice cage! She’s a very lucky bunny to have found such a great owner. Diverting money from the Windstone fund to a new cage – now that’s true bunny love! 😆
