I didn’t see it. I don’t like dramas or sad movies, and that one wasn’t exactly a romantic comedy. 😀
I am with stephanie, I only like happy endings, there are very few dramas I like and I think the newest one is “Searching For Bobby Fisher” LMAO.
I agree with both of you, dramas aren’t my cup of tea. I think real life is hard enough.
June 6, 2008 at 6:55 pm #711477Didn’t the guy from Wings kiss the guy from the Pretender in Jeffrey? I’m pretty sure they did (mostly because I thought they were both really hot!). And Patrick Stewart, Captain Picard himself, was in that movie. And nobody blinked twice.

The one movie that got me sobbing was the Barbarian Invasions (Les invasions barbares). I was a mess!
Hey, I have the special edition of this signed by Roy Dupuis. I just haven’t watched it yet. 😆

Jeffery did not get the world wide acclaim that Broke Back did. Matthew Brodrick also kissed a guy in Torch Song Trilogy
I do not understand why it’s such a big deal for 2 guys to kiss.
I don’t understnad why the movie got such recognition. I was not to impressed with the movie (story) or actingJune 6, 2008 at 8:58 pm #711480Dragon Master wrote:ddvm wrote:Didn’t the guy from Wings kiss the guy from the Pretender in Jeffrey? June 6, 2008 at 9:27 pm #711481I have NO objection to seeing two men kissing. I think we should see more of it. 😉 And I’ll leave it at that so Nam doesn’t have to go Mod on the thread! 😆
June 6, 2008 at 10:49 pm #711482I do not see the big deal about it at all
June 6, 2008 at 11:30 pm #711483This is an above 18 (I think…) rated question. But, has anyone seen Trick? It was so funny.
June 6, 2008 at 11:49 pm #711484It wasn’t just kissing, guys. Not only was the other stuff pretty graphic, but it was the emotion that was shown while it was happening that made it so intense and yes, brave, in my opinion. Those were tough roles. The Birdcage was a wonderful, light hearted comedy. Brokeback was not. When watching a movie like the Birdcage, people are not asked to look at gays and homosexual relationships in a serious light. You just cant compare that to Brokeback.
June 6, 2008 at 11:51 pm #711485I haven’t seen Brokeback, I can’t offer anything at all. But, I think ski is right.
June 7, 2008 at 12:36 am #711486True – the movies are totally different. But I still don’t see why taking the role was so courageous, especially these days. Maybe 50 years ago people would have wondered about the stars’ sexuality or freaked that they kissed each other but today I just don’t see that anybody cares. Which is a GOOD thing. We’ve come a long way since taking such a role could possibly have harmed a career. (Not to say we don’t still have a long way to go – DM’s excellent point about George Takei as an example.)
Don’t get me wrong – I liked Heath Ledger as an actor (most of the reason I went to see the movie in the first place) and I thought it was a real tragedy when he died. Both for his family and for the movie world in general. But he kept going on and on about what a risk he took doing the role back when the movie first came out. And I kept thinking why was it such a risk? I still can’t name an actor/actress who’s career was damaged by playing a gay/lesbian role. Again – that’s a good thing. I just never understood why he made such a point about it and it bugged me.
June 7, 2008 at 12:56 am #711487EXACTLY I think it was all the hype about the GAY story line that made people talk about courage. If it was a B movie and had no BIG name actors no one would have even batted an eye.
I HATE how Hollywood blows so many things out of proportion just to make money. I did not even think either of the shoudl have gottn nominated for the Oscars they did. The movie was VERY slow and boring for me. Then again one of my friends said the movie was made for straight people not gay people that live that life everyday.
I speak first hand abotu how hard it is to come out of the closet even today for fear of nothing but reticule, name calling and finger pointingJune 7, 2008 at 1:42 am #711488I do see that point, but I dont agree. Despite the day and age, there are still a great many people who are totally against homosexuality. These people can range from normal folks who just dont agree to fanatics that can stalk or harm someone for a role they played in a movie:

But to make matters worse, I read a memo from the Fred Phelps website stating they will be picketing his funeral because of Heath’s role in Brokeback Mountain and I cannot express how angry that message made me, especially the language they used, the fact they said Heath was now “in hell” and that nothing else about him was relevant or consequential. WTF man, WTF. Some people are just sick and twisted 😡
I dont think you guys are giving them enough credit unless you really dont realize the amount of animosity that homosexuals experience. I am truly surprised at you, DM. Dont you have any incidents that you can look back on where you were treated poorly because of your orientation? These two are actors who are exposed to the public on a daily basis! Can you imagine the hate mail and flak they got because of that role? There is a reason gays are in the closet.

fear is a powerful motivator. I dont agree with homosexuality, but I dont persecute or act prejudiced towards others of that inclination. However, many people can be hateful and cruel.
June 7, 2008 at 2:24 am #711490I had forgotten about the Fred Phelps website. I guess I didn’t think the role was such a big deal because most of my friends are really, really liberal. And people’s sexual orientation just never mattered to any of us. And even the people I work with who aren’t liberal didn’t seem disturbed by the movie. One mentioned that she had no intention of seeing it but in the next breath said how hot Ledger was. But I live in NJ which is a great deal more liberal than a lot of states (even if our governor resigned after announcing he was gay!)So I’ve never really run across the level of prejudice and ignorance necessary to write hate mail over a movie role. But I see your point, Ski – it’s just really sad that there are people like Fred Phelps out there. 😥
