Either way, I don’t put much faith in dog bite tests. They have a special tool to measure jaw strength. Basically, they just make the dog bite the tool, and they get a number. This is very flawed. A dog will bite with different strengths depending on its mood, the situation, and even based on individual genetics. It would be similar to saying that people from Iceland have stronger jaw strength than people from India. It’s nearly impossible to test for, and even harder to make a blanket statement on. I dont remember the hyenas number. This test had men riling up the dogs then sicking them on a mans arm while the bite meter was attached to it. You are right, though… it could very well be innacurate. It was enough to convince me that a pits jaw is no stronger than any other dogs, though.

I think it’s the fact that they have the tenacity to HANG ON that’s the scary part π―
July 2, 2007 at 6:36 am #593306In all reality though… If a pit bull attacks you and wants to kill you, it probably will. If a GSD attacks you and wants to kill you, it probably will too. Even if one does hang on and the other just bites over and over again, what are the chances, really, that you will walk away alive from either attack? (assuming no one else is there to protect you). Pretty much any dog over 50 or 60 lbs is going to kill you, or at least hurt you really, really bad, if it honestly wants to, and if you are defenseless. And also remember that most victims are children.. It doesn’t take much to kill a child. A pomeranian once killed a baby! You don’t have to have the strongest jaws, and how the dog bites won’t make any difference in the end. Dead is dead.
Yet another thing to think about? There are only, on average, about 12 deaths a year as a result of dog attacks. Considereing we have over a billion people in this country, and over 50 million dogs.. You are probably more likely to die from falling space debris! (I always have to laugh when I see people scared that someone’s loose wolfdog is going to kill a person… Seriously, your chances of getting killed by ANY dog are almost zilch. Your chances of getting killed by an escaped wolfdog are even less!) It’s like the whole rabies scare thing. You are even less likely to be killed by rabies, then by dog attack. There are only about 2-4 rabies deaths a year if I remember correctly.

I read that too. It really is the media just blowing things out of proportion. π Getting hit by space debree, hu? Dont suppose you have a link to that statistic? It would be a great part in my speech!!

Technically, a hyena is not a canine, not even in the same family. They are close to mongooses & meerkats. Estimates of jaw strength is around 4000psi. Sorry, hyenas are really interesting to me…
July 2, 2007 at 5:22 pm #593309You are more likely to be killed by a falling coconut then by a dog, LMAO.

Where did you find that?? π I need these silly statistics!

Good fact! Thanks. I always thought they were canines!

Supposedly…
Approximately 150 people are killed every year by falling coconuts. A person is more than 60 times more likely to be killed by a falling coconut than by a pit bull. http://www.freewebs.com/bslworkshop/stats.htm There’s a couple of other interesting ones on there too, though they do seem to focus on Pits.July 2, 2007 at 8:26 pm #593314Really!!! (suspiciously eyes palm trees)
July 2, 2007 at 8:32 pm #593315I only mentioned hyenas because someone else mentioned crocs…
Actually, I have no clue what your chances are of getting hit by space debris are, I was more joking around π It’s important with stats though to find out what country they involve. For example, the falling coconuts.. Is that 150 people a year just in the us, or is that worldwide?
Have fun with these stats, its more than you will probably ever need!

Odds of being hit by falling space debris: 1 in 60 trillion… According to this page π π
And supposedly, the coconut thing is worldwide. πJuly 2, 2007 at 9:37 pm #593317AH HAHA! XD we’ll never look at coconut palms the same way again…
I wonder if getting hit by one lobbed by an angry produce clerk at the grocery store counts in those stats….
