I know some of us are glass collectors in addition to our Windstone addiction – are there any bottle collectors? The reason I ask is there used to be bottling plant here in Soda Springs – the water here is naturally carbonated and we seriously have more springs than I can count 😀 There is a home being built just down the road from us and they’ve excavated a trench to divert a spring. The bottom of the trench and the dirt excavated from it is filled with shards of old bottles – the glass is very thick and heavy and is green, dark brown and clear that has turned purple. Any idea how to figure the age of any of these pieces? I’ll get pix up later this evening… Thankies!

I have some old bottles, but mostly collected for the fun of it. I’m sure there are forums out there for bottle collectors, though. Maybe they could help you. Too bad none of the bottles are intact…they would probably be worth something to collectors. Plus, the historical value, of course. 😀

I don’t mind having just the shards – they appeal to my magpie nature… 😈 😆 We did find a partly intact clear bottle that says “Lava Hot Springs Bottling WKS – Idaho – Registered” molded into the glass. Lava Hot Springs is 20 minutes down the road from here. Makes me wonder if there was a glass factory in Lava that produced bottles for the Idanha Mineral Water Company…

              I hear ya, I’m a magpie myself. 😀

Are any of the springs used for soaking/relaxing in or just bottled water? I bet there is a lot of history in your area surrounding the springs!

There are hot soak pools at Lava – Soda hasn’t got any. We do have a geyser, though… Soda Springs was a rest stop on the Oregon Trail pioneer route and the big springs are named: Hooper Springs, Beer Springs, Formation Springs, Octagon Springs, Lover’s Delight, Steamboat Springs, Horseshoe, Blanche, Jews-harp, 90 percent, Idan-ha, Mammoth, Fresh Water and Champange. In pioneer times Soda Springs was called the “oasis of the Oregon Trail”

How cool! I wonder what the 90 percent refers to?

                  Cool geyser!

I’m not exactly a bottle collector but I got some miniture bottles from an import store that was going out of business some time back. They stand about 3 inches, different shapes and colors and have little corks in them. I thought they were cute and picked them up at about 25 cents each. Whenever I get my camera, I’ll post pictures.

I would go to the bookstore and see if you can find any books on collectable glass bottles, or look around on forums, or even ebay to get an idea. I have a few, but I just gave some more away this past weekend to a friend who makes her own wines and such and reuses interesting bottles. Some were old whiskey bottles. I kept an old vinegar bottle from France for my brother and I kept a deep amber colored bottle, an old New Bedford Whaling Co. bottle, and a Kentucky Distilleries bottle (it’s frosted glass). They’re all pre-1900 from what we can tell and were either in a wall or in the basement of our house (we’re redoing it now that we own it and don’t just rent it). I kept the more interesting ones. We did find an old bottle (with the cork/wire opening) which still had root beer soda in it. We chucked it (I wasn’t going to try and see if it tasted any good!). I also have several liquor bottles I have kept (many are small, or have fun shapes to them) that I’ve collected from overseas (only one brand I have found is just becoming available to import into the states as of the last couple of years). One is just sentimental from college.
