Im curious how people like (hope you dont mind a little publicity here) Hannah, Kyrin and Dragonmedley (and probably more of you talented folks, but those three came to mind first)
get such nice, clean, crisp, bold lines in your PYOs? Is it a particular kind of brush? Lots of layers of paint with a special brush? luck?

      In short: a steady hand.

      In length:
I use a process that takes a LOT of layers of paint. I basically start with the bottom layer, being careful to make it a thin coat of paint but thick enough to give me an idea of where I’m going to lay down the colors. I let it dry COMPLETELY (this takes between hours and days depending on the paint and how much retarder you use) before putting on another coat of paint. The reason for this is that if you try to put a second coat of paint on a tacky or wet layer, you can end up “washing” off the paint underneath! this makes for a giant headache because it can mean having to redo that area several times just to make it match the rest of the piece again.

To make crisp lines in a design I use the same sort of technique – once I have my base colors down and I’m happy with how opaque they are, I let that dry completely! This is very important for the following steps – it must be BONE DRY! Why? Because when I’m painting lines I MESS UP A LOT! I’ve been meaning to make a video of this because I’m horrible at explaining it, but basically what I do is try to place the patterning on as well as I can, though inevitably there are areas that I go over, or touch the side of the sculpture that I didn’t want it to be, etc. What I do is take a damp brush (not the brush I have been using to create the design, but an equally small, DAMP brush – making it too wet will cause issues, you just want it damp enough that it will pull away the paint mistakes) and then I gently “paint” the areas that I have made mistakes on. This process of putting paint down and then gently wiping away the mistakes with a clean brush will help to give it that nice clean edge.

Yeah.. so horrible at explaining things!! XD I’ll see if I can make a short video this weekend to show exactly what I mean.

A tiny brush, diluted paint and by being anal – and like Hannah said, a steady hand. The okapicorn and the okapirin are actually the first stripes I attempted – the kirin would need work, now that I have more experience.

I consider this one my best so far:

I find the neat lines easy to do on the unicorn; very few fissures, so to speak.

On a dragon like this one, it’s much more challenging.

But I do my line, then go over it and will do tiny-tiny touch-ups with the tip of the brush if it doesn’t look perfect.

        Like I said: anal.

Who painted the silvery Kirin in the first picture? Kyrin? That is really pretty and I am not usually into Kirins.

I am happy to say that I have Hannah’s unicorn. It is amazing when you look at it and realize she did that pattern without a stencil; it is just so perfect.

TwinDragon2 did the silver Kirin in the first picture (according to the caption)

Thanks, Wolfen. Between Kyrin, Kirin and kirin, I wasn’t sure who did the Kirin. 😉
