Yay, he’s home! He’s gorgous and is now happily getting to know the Jade Oriental and little Emerald on his shelf in the curio cabinet.
I’ll be displaying him along with his COA, later, I’m tired. Got home today to discover my 6 year old got in school suspension, he was very bad today, so I ended up locking up all of his toys, game systems, the TV we use upstairs for kid movies and games, his Gameboy, you name it, I locked it up. He now has nothing to play with whatsoever. His only concession is reading books given to him from school, those were left out so he can read those if he gets bored, which he will.
Until we see some marked improvement he will come home from school, do his homework, then go straight to his room. He will come down for dinner, then back to his room. He’s grounded for the duration and will have to earn his privs back one at a time. This is gonna be a rough road, but I am hoping that it will get results.
I am very unhappy about having to crack down like this, but he fought with two classmates, kicked the teacher and yelled at her, shouted out the answers during a test, and then threw the classroom globe across the room. All in one day! This is ridiculous and unacceptable in the extreme, talk about an embarrassing phone call!
I am so disappointed in him, he can do so much better.
Anyway, at least my beautiful dragon arrived to help cheer me up after that bad news.
Anyone else have an ADHD kiddo? And suggestions for strategies to help get my boy to toe the line and do what he needs to do. The ADHD isn’t any kind of excuse, it is just part of the challenge we’re facing, but we’re against drugging him, and we really feel that he needs to learn how to control his impulses and rambunctiousness. Obviously today he had a really hard time doing that. OY vey!

Sorry, don’t have kids (not 2 legged ones anyway) so no experience with ADHD. But I think it is great you are trying to not medicate him. I hope it works. Maybe there are ADHD support groups for parents that might help?
January 25, 2008 at 12:19 am #658972Oh, that’s tough! But keep on with the consequences. It should eventually get through that when he does something, there will be a reaction…
As for the no drugs, you may want to try a supplement called Efalex. It’s a mix of essential fatty acids. It works for some, and not for others. If it doesn’t work, at least he’ll get the good fatty acids.
Some people say coffee helps ADHD by stimulating the brain – ADHD is an understimulating brain. You’d have to research this, though. I only saw this once, but mind you, I haven’t researched ADHD all that much.
Read my books! Volume 1 and 2 of A Dragon Medley are available now.

January 25, 2008 at 12:33 am #658974No 2 legged kids here either. I can’t help you there but as I was reading all I could think of was THANK GOODNESS it was not your new dragon getting thrown across the room!!
Sorry lame attempt to cheer you upJanuary 25, 2008 at 12:35 am #658975purpledoggy wrote:I NEED PICS!
Pics of what??–OOPPSS I guess pics of the dragons again I was thinking of her son trowing things and kicking the teacher
January 25, 2008 at 12:42 am #658976My experiance (after 10 years of kiddie care and a brother) is that they seem to benift from physical activity. It seems to help especially with little boys. Find something really active like swimming or Soccer. Something where they are moving all the time. Good luck!
Glad your Blue Sun arrived! Post pics soon please!
January 25, 2008 at 2:53 am #658977No I don’t want pics of her son being bad, I want pics of the dragon. I was in a rush to type in between two back to back diaper changes and didn’t read the entire post.
January 25, 2008 at 3:12 am #658978Oh my goodness, Kyrin! WHAT A DAY you’ve had! 😯 Some of my friends in High School and Middle school had ADD…they were great fun to be around when they didn’t take their meds 😆 but they were all medicated. I’ve heard fish oil helps you focus. It’s stinky pills but they’re super cheap (boyfriend has ADD and takes it)
Personally, I get distracted VERY very easily, and I find if I can entertain more of my brain with simple, mundane tasks,I can focus better on the important things. Chewing gum or pacing or moving my feet under the chair helps, but certainly doesn’t always solve the problem.
I’m certainly no source for parental advice, but maybe confining him to his room isn’t the best idea. I can imagine, if he’s already mentally understimulated most of the time, taking away what stimulation he has might only make him frustrated and angry.
Maybe after dinner, before bed, you and him or he and your husband could go on a short little jog or a walk. Your husband could point out different kinds of plants and trees and brands of cars and that way he’d be physically stimulated (walking or jogging) and mentally stimulated (learning new tidbits of information, and bonding with Dad :D) or (I dont think they taught us addition till the first grade so I don’t know where kids these days are at, in their education at 6 yrs old) if he knows addition, quiz him in math while you’re walking. That way he can get all the shouting out answers out of his system 🙂 You could use trees and cars for the math…”2 cars in that driveway, plus 1 in this driveway…how many?”
I dunno, just a thought.
Congrats on your beautiful new Sun Dragon though! He’s gorgeous, and I can’t wait to see pics!

Right now we’re trying to get it into his head that when he does things like this, there are consequences. He hates time outs and situations where he is confined, so being in his room with no toys, etc, really brings it home to him that he messed up.
As for the walk idea, it might work in spring or summer, but right now it is 10 degrees outside with a wind chill bringing it down to 2, no thanks…too bloody cold out there!
Thanks for the advice and input. I have a book about ADHD with exercises for Alex and I to do that help with self control, self esteem, and various other things.
He’s a very bright intelligent kid, quick to pick things up. I wonder if he is just hyperactive and his acting up is a result of boredom, because he apparently finishes class assignments quickly, then acts up while he is waiting for the rest of the class to catch up. We do know that sitting still is a tough thing for him, but I question the accuracy of the diagnosis.
Anyway, we will see. I am working on getting him involved with Cub Scouts and hopefully karate, so that he has an outlet for all this extra energy. With luck that will help him, and we won’t be having all this drama going on.

January 25, 2008 at 5:37 am #658981I have no non-furry kids so I can’t give any advice. But congrats on the new addition.
January 25, 2008 at 6:42 am #658982ill try a new answer that might help. does he like money ??? i think all kids do and they love to go to the store to buy somethin.i know my kids do.i remember my dad used to pay me to read books cause i hated doing it when i was younger, but i tell you what i got into those books and on top of that i got paid. maybe you can try a daily system .if he gets into no trouble he earns money or points towards something he really wants.
it doesnt have to be a big amount just a little at a time so he can look forward to saving for somthin and you dont go broke.January 25, 2008 at 10:36 am #658983Congrats on the blue sun! 😀
