I know that theres already a lot of articles on antiquing, but from the experts, whats the easiest and best way to do it? I hae never done it before, but i would like to give it a try on a dragon I’ll be working on soon. I use acrylic paints and varnish for the protection. I dunno if after I finishing painting do I antique before the varnish…..I heard some people using ink….what’s the best way???

      Thanks guys.

I put the top coat and let it dry a day or two before I antique; otherwise, I’ve had the paint come off when I wipe off the antiquing.

Read my books! Volume 1 and 2 of A Dragon Medley are available now.

Same here. I know a lot of people antique AFTER sealing, I never do that simply because I think the antique looks much richer with it is applied over the raw paint. You get a more natural shadow rathe rthen a sharp contrst in my opinion. The down fall is that your primary coat of paint is more fragile when wiping, but once you get the hang of it, it’s actually quite easy.

I’ve never used ink, but I’ll sometimes use a techinque I call piping whenI geta super thin brush and will actually hand paint the antique into the crevices instead of antiquing. I basically only do it with kirin scales. The lavender kirin in my gallery was done like that. It takes a logn time, but the end result is much more consistant looking and since I am OCD I do it on all my kirins. LOL!

Have u done it to your dragons?

So, basically just use black paint, but with a wet cloth or something, wipe off the excess?

So, basically just use black paint, but with a wet cloth or something, wipe off the excess?

I’ve done it to almost everything in some form or another. Also, it doesn’t necessarily have to be black, but I usually go with a darker color over a lighter. It all depends on the effect you want really. Sometimes I use browns, or even metallic purples and stuff for different effects.

What I do, is once my piece I want to antique is nice and dry. I will mix a tiny bit of water, or medium with my paint. This will thin it out a bit. You don’t want it thin like water, but just the right thickness so that it won’t dribble all over the place once you apply it but thin enough it can easily be worked into all the crevices.

At first, until you get the hang of it, just do one small area at a time. If the paint dries, then your pretty much screwed and have to do the area all over again. (this is where medium comes in handy because it makes the paint dry much slower vs. using just water) I wipe usually with a clean soft rag, small areas with a q-tip, and I even resort to using my fingers a bit. It can be messy, but it’s generally a fast process.

You just want to wipe enough to remove the new paint, and gently enough to not mess up the undercoat. for your first one, you might want to try sealing it first, just so you get the idea. It’s much easier to wash off paint on a sealed surface, I just think it’s more of a pain to make it stick evenly when it is sealed.

and one I piped in with purple, I usually only pipe on a white background only because I don’t want the white to absorb any color and stay nice and bright white. *nods*
