Today, I got my new airbrush out and started my PYO Keeper with it, so far he has a lovely black basecoat.

The airbrush is a neat challenge, but I am thinking I just might do his main colors with it, then follow up with brushes for the details. Brave of me, but I figure I need to start somewhere. I’ll post WIP of my learning experience both with the Keeper and the airbrush.

Purplecat, if you have any advice, I’m all ears, cause I know you’re good with one. So far I am being religious about cleaning it after I stop, and working with thinning the paints, clogging is a problem if they aren’t thin enough. However, this method takes your paint a long way, I used way less black airbrushing than I would have if I had used brushes.

I read on an airbrush forum that if you put a quick spritz of windex (i use the cheap $1 a bottle stuff) into the cup between color changes it will go a long way towards keeping your airbrush clean and consistent spray.
🙂 I’ll see if I can remember anything else. I know that you need to protect your needle tip at all costs. NEVER leave it exposed or take the tip off when unnecessary. If it even gets the smallest bend to it you’ll have problems. Treat the needle with the gentlest care.
On occasion (about once every other month) I’ll totally dissassemble mine and let it soak in nail polish remover. That takes off alot of paint grunge which would ordinarily not come off otherwise. Just gently scrub the parts with an old toothbrush and reassemble carefully. Keep 3in1 oil around to oil the trigger if it sticks too.

All he looks like right now is black! I had to stop to make food for the family, I’ll be going to do more painting here in a bit.

If you wish, I can post the pic of him all black.

Okay, I’ve decided from here on out he will be hand painted, but his base colors are done.

First I painted him black all over, then used Golden brand Pytholo green on him, it actually ended up looking more navy blue on top of the black. Then I used some Duncan Golden Teal Pearl on him, which was kinda a golden green haze, which looked terrible, but since I wasn’t done, I didn’t panic, but my husband suggested at that point, perhaps I should have used something else to experiment with. I then reapplied the Golden brand Pytholo Green, and whoa, does he look good now! The picture came out darker than he is, and a bit greener, he’s actually teal fading into dark blue, I plan to handpaint some more greens and golds on him when done he should be really gorgous.

Also had a bit of a panic when my airbrush needle backed out of its position, and then when I went to put it back, paint clogging the nozzle bent the tip! Arrgghh…some careful work by my husband got it straightened back out and it is working, but I think I am going to need to get a couple back up needles. Just cause I’m a clutz!

Okay, here he is with some details done, I still have a long way to go. There is a lot to this dragon! I’m quitting for awhile, but so far his colors are blues, greens and gold, I still need to do something with his wings, and the back feathers, and finish the gold on the scales, gold leaf his claws and horns, etc.

Okay, so he’s like 1/2 done, but I thought you guys would like to see what he looks like so far. The disply side shots all ended up fuzzy and after 6 attempts, I gave it up. This shot shows what I’m doing to him, and what he looks like so far.

I may antique him when I am all done, not sure yet.
