So who uses what for their base coats/primers?
Just a normal paint or “Special” labeled base coat/primer.

I can only find 2 types of “Labeled” stuff here, ones a medium Grey and the other’s Black.(Unless I’m shopping for house paint!!)

But on other projects I’ve just used plain old solid colour normal paint for the base coat. Usually white.

For my muse I just used a regular acrylic paint base in white. My dragon was airbrushed in red first (again in just a regular acrylic paint) but I found that I didn’t put a thick enough coat and have had to go over the area around his eyes and neck several times with the brush.

I’ve used Krylon Primer in White on several of my pieces and used Rust-Oleum Painter’s Touch Primer in Gray on one piece. They are both aerosols. I do several thin coats (takes awhile). In addition to the primer, I sometimes do a base coat of acrylic in the lightest color I intend to use in my paint scheme with my airbrush. Light coats with the primer and airbrush means really no filling of details and a nice base for when I start painting.

I just use an acrylic for a base coat, any color you want really. I like to use black as a base coat, but white works great as well. Perhaps I should try gray sometime.

I always use white and or black acrylic paint for a base coat….it seems to work fine for me… 😀

I started a griffin months ago using white acrylic paint thinned with GAC 100 for a primer. But I haven’t been able to get the effects I wanted when painting on top of that, and that griffin is still unfinished. Currently I don’t use a primer at all, but go straight to the paints themselves.

For the griffins, I’ve been starting with the lightest one of the colors I plan to use in each area, and dilute the paint down with water. It needs three or four layers to look like anything, but since I layer multiple colors on top of each other anyway it works. For the dragons, though, I love the effects that come from staining the sculpture first. The staining causes random blotching on the scales, but this seems to add depth when transparent colors are added on top. That said, my staining never turns out even. 🙄 I’ve got a lot to learn!
