Somewhere in the forums I ran across a thread that I can’t find now, about Barrdwing restoring a badly damaged green mama dragon. I saw the pics of the poor thing at the begining, but can’t find anything that shows the end result. Is it finished or still a work in progress? What was the material used to re-sculpt the missing pieces like the wings? Brand and color of paint? How, how, how?!? I’m full of ” ‘satiable curiosity” and would love to see more pics!

October 20, 2007 at 3:04 pm #628126I don’t remember Barrdwing restoring a green momma dragon, but that could just be my memory being faulty. I know several of the people who do repairs use Apoxie Sculpt.
Kyrin has restored a green momma you can see her in this thread:
http://www.windstoneeditions.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=4203You can see some of Kyrin’s other repairs in progress in this thread:
http://www.windstoneeditions.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=4394October 20, 2007 at 3:49 pm #628127I don’t think it was one of Kyrin’s repairs, tho’ I may be wrong 😯 This poor thing was missing most of her wings. Does that ring any bells for anyone?

October 20, 2007 at 3:51 pm #628128I didn’t know Barrdwing did repairs. Are you sure it wasn’t Kyrin?
October 20, 2007 at 5:09 pm #628129Nope, not certain of anything except that the pics showed a green mama dragon that was horribly broken. She was missing most of her wings. It was really late last night when I ran across it looking under ‘tutorials’; but I know I didn’t dream it! Ack! *pulls hair* I hate when I forget to bookmark something 👿

I know I haven’t repaired a mama dragon with badly damaged wings. I do remember someone showing us one that did though, but I don’t remember if they repaired it or not.

If you are up in the higher elevations, yes.
We’re a bit lower, so we’re just getting rained on. 🙂
But give it another month and we’ll be getting snow, never fear.

October 21, 2007 at 2:21 am #628136Ahaha . . . an unfulfilled promise rears its head! 😳 Yes, I still have that poor green mother, unrepaired. I have the Apoxie Sculpt and some paint that should match, and all the good intentions in the world for repairing her . . . but I want to practice with the materials first because I’m nervous about screwing it up. 🙄 Which means it’ll probably be a while before I tackle the actual repairs. Having seen the repairs other folks have accomplished, I know it can be done, but it sure won’t be easy! She’s got broken bits everywhere, and those wings are a nightmare.
Well, I have promised that dragon that she will be repaired, and I am slowly but surely learning how to paint (bless the PYOs), so that’s half the battle. When I learn how to sculpt as well 😛 then I can begin. I’ll take photos and post a thread when things get rolling!
Materials: Lots of people here have had good luck with Apoxie Sculpt, which is available through Aves Studios (there’s a thread somewhere, but if you Google the product name you’ll find the web page). It can be used to fill in gaps and even sculpt missing pieces. Melody said that the earlier Old Green mothers were painted using Liquitex, so I bought the closest shades of green. (Later on they switched to Golden paints.)
There are some wonderful threads regarding repairs, including the various types of paint used to approximate or even match production colors. I started printing some of them out so that I wouldn’t have to remember where they were later on. Some of them have in-progress photos, like the famous Faceless White Male that somebody here repaired. It’s fascinating! 🙂
October 21, 2007 at 2:31 am #628137I look forward to seeing your progress! Thanks for answering. I’ll keep looking in archives for other people’s work as well, just cause I like success stories! I’m sure you’ll do fine with the repairs. Good Luck!

p.s. do you know how the damage occured? (or did I miss that part 😆 )

October 21, 2007 at 1:34 pm #628138Is Apoxie Sculpt like Gapoxio? Gapoxio is a clay type epoxy. Air dries hard or can be heat cured; is strong yet lightweight and takes paint readily. Some of my more ambitious costuming group have used Gapoxio to re-create the Elvish Armor from Lord of the Rings.
