I’ve been looking in to buying a baby sling. I want to try to learn how to carry Alyssa around in one so when I go to the fairy festival and ren fair I won’t have to worry about pushing the stroller around in the mud. It will also make feeding in public easier. I have a ring sling that someone gave me but I was looking at the baby wraps. Has anyone here used one? They look kind of complicated, how hard are they to use?
March 29, 2008 at 2:01 am #684506I tried it, for very short trips it’s ok, but I had problems with aurora scooting around in there til I was afraid she’d smother. They are much more awkward and difficult than they look…and at the end of the trip, your shoulder will be killing you…lol. A 10-12 lb baby begins to feel quite heavier when hanging on your side for very long…
March 31, 2008 at 1:37 am #684507I did when my twins were small, but not with a sling. We used the front carriers and I’d have one on my front and one on my back. When those muscles got tired, I just slung them around onto my sides. It was about the only way I was able to get anything done. I also got really good at carrying the double stroller up and down the front porch steps with it loaded with boys and their stuff…… I guess you could say I was paranoid, but I didn’t want to leave one alone outside to go back in the house for the other one…. or vice versa. I managed the stroller situation until they were about 2 or 2 1/2 years old. Wearing them lasted ’til they were about 9 months.

March 31, 2008 at 12:42 pm #684508We had the front carrier thingy… I’m not sure exactly what it was called. Chinook was 7 months when we went to France, and that’s how we carried her while touristing around.
It was just like a backback, just in front. I don’t remember it being hard to get on, but now I’m having doubts about the age. I’m not sure it was meant for newborns who couldn’t hold their head up.
The only thing that got difficult was the heat: stomach against stomach, you get nice and toasty.
Read my books! Volume 1 and 2 of A Dragon Medley are available now.

http://www.sarahjestin.com/feedbacklists.htmApril 1, 2008 at 2:48 am #684509I love the slings! I mentioned it in one of eaglefeather’s threads (baby shower?). I preferred them to the baby bjorn (front carrier), but husband preferred the bjorn. The sling that’s best for you & baby will depend on her age and what exactly you want it for. If you’re really after an alternative to the stroller, look at either the maya wrap or the new native baby carrier. For ease in breast feeding, the maya wrap was waaaayyyy better, as the new native baby carrier only worked well when my babies were smaller. As soon as they hit a certain size then it’s only good to carry them around, not breast feed. But, it’s certainly more secure and easier to pack and easier on your back. However, if you are going to get a sling, start wearing Alyssa around the house more & more and get used to it slowly. I used mine all the time and would rarely bring the stroller when we would go to places like the field, zoo, botanical gardens, etc. However, strollers have the advantage of being able to put the baby down as well as being able to store diapers & such without carrying them (if it’s an all day thing). Both have merit.
April 1, 2008 at 3:39 am #684510I got 3 different Bjorn type carriers, one was stupid simple to figure out, the second (I think it really is a Bjorn), and the 3rd had no instructions and I can’t figure the sucker out. Personally the first was far easier to use, but Khym out grew really quickly, and there was no name on it. All 3 were second hand from friends/family.
April 13, 2008 at 8:16 pm #684511I ran across this. Thought it might be helpful.
