I figure since so many of us here have children or are getting ready to have them maybe this can help them out. Since this is my first child and I have to idea what I’m doing I have a few questions….
Alyssa is 5 months old and every time we eat around her she is always reaching for what we have so I figure we should start her on solid foods (her peds doctor says the same thing). I have the rice cereal but haven’t given her any yet. I was reading about teaching her how to drink out of a cup. When do I give it a try and what should I put in it? When can I start her on juice and water? Also I think she is teething pretty bad since he has kept me up the past few nights and is really fussy. I give her tylenol when nothing else seems to work. What else can I do for her? I can use pretty much any advice on what to do for teething.

They have little ice toys for teething that are pretty good. Yup…tylenol is about the only real cure for the pain… Solids are probably fine for you to start right now, just introduce new things gradually, that way you can tell what she’s prone to spit up…and what’ll give her the runs… Watered down juice is ok to start her on with a sipper…but beware…juice always gave mine the runs. I’d stick with whatever she’s already used to drinking. πŸ™‚

            Wow! 5 months already?!
I think for solids, do the Cheerios as it gets them used to swallowing textured food and they disolve really easy. Don’t do the honeynut cheerios. No honey!
I rarely gave the kids juices. Way too much sugar. Water and milk was all they got until they were 1 and even then not much juices.
The rice cereal we would put in a sippy cup. It made the liquid thicker so didn’t spill as much and taught them to hold the cup. We didn’t use the no spill kind. At some point they are going to need to learn if it tips, it spills.
It was funny cause they couldn’t ever figure out how to use straws. They kept tipping the cups πŸ™„
Applesauce, those little meat stick (gross) they loved.
For teething get some of those tough little bread stick things. I can’t remember what they’re called. They’re made for kids. Or the teeting rings you can put in the freezer. Lot’s of drool rags πŸ˜† They loved chewing on the rags. Ugh! I hated that sound. It still gives me the heeby jeebies!

For teething we followed the advice of our dentist… get a couple of the really fat, chunky handled toothbrushes for toddlers and put them in the fridge or freezer. The handles are big enough for ‘little graspers’ to hold onto, the cold helps sooth their gums and the little one gets used to the texture of toothbrush bristles in their mouths… it helps later on when the teeth have erupted through the gums and they won’t fight you on brushing those new chompers.

For solids, we started the boys really, really early; at about 8 weeks actually. Mixed rice cereal with formula and put it in their bottles. We just couldn’t keep ’em satisfied otherwise… Our pediatrician was the one who suggested it…

              Good luck! πŸ˜€

I started Glen on the rice cereal when he was about 4 months old. I cut a hole on a nipple that was big enough to let it slowly come out. But I also used it very watered down (Another Gramma rule. And it worked). Then as he started to do the reach thing like Alyssa, I began to feed him the cereal from a spoon. After a few weeks of that, I started adding fruit baby foods to it. He was eating whole finger foods by about 10 months or so. He eats like a bird now, but he has days he eats like a cow and makes up for it all. πŸ˜†

And teething…If the Tylenol isn’t working they do make a form of baby orajel. It’s great. My gramma had sage advice on this one too…But, I’m not gonna post it. Now adays it could be contrued as child abuse I suppose. 😯 πŸ˜†

                Plenty of great advice here!

Chinook started on applesauce (about 1 teaspoon a day) when she was about a month old – that’s when she started to sleep her nights. It was a laborious teaspoon to swallow, though…

I honestly don’t remember her having any problems on solids and/or teething. I prepared all her food; the rare times I got the baby food, she hated it.

Read my books! Volume 1 and 2 of A Dragon Medley are available now.

teething is always fun… besides for the chew toys you can take a baby wash cloth, get it wet and then freeze it… my girls loved it.

My first got horible diper rashes from teething… 😯 But I found something that works really good for that! Corona and not the beer!

Feeding… heck, just read the labels! I remember that you can start the rice cereal at 4 months and I get the fruits and veggies mixed… either at 5 to 6 months and meats are last.

Here soon I am going to have to remember more! lol πŸ˜›

I was on rice cereal at 2 weeks (mixed in formula of course). The doctor tried to say wait for 6 months thing, but we wouldn’t sleep more than 2 hours because we were always hungry. Mom said, “That’s it!” and started mixing the rice cereal into the formula – we slept through the night for 7-8 hours. Happy babies, happy parents πŸ™‚ New foods were introduced gradually. I know my mom liked reading the stuff by Dr. Spock (no relation to the Vulcan ). Most everything else was from my grandmother (and having had 2 other kids before my brother and I).

I had a bottle until we a couple months after turning 4 yrs old (my brother and I wouldn’t give them up, even though we could and had been using cups along with them… we wanted them when we napped!). My mom used Easter as a time to get us off of them – “Hey kids, the Easter Bunny has some baby bunnies that could really use those bottles, so he can take care of them.” Worked like a charm! πŸ˜€ The bottles disappeard that night (packed in storage) πŸ˜†

I know for teething, other than the teething rings or the little rings that you can put in a freezer before giving to a teething baby, you can always use a little bottle of like rum or bourbon (like the little shot glasses you see at a liquor store if you don’t keep any for baking or drinking around). You just dab your finger on the lip and rub it on the gums. It numbs the gums just enough. Works like a charm and no, it won’t make your baby drunk, sick or an alcoholic πŸ˜‰

Thats why I didn’t want to post about my Gramma’s peppermint schnapps idea. But it worked like a charm! πŸ˜€

How about those arrowroot (brand) cookies? they’re like indestructible, and they can gnaw on the for hours!! I used to give tthose to the little one I nannied for, and plain cheerios. As for the teething, I’ve always been partial to the plastic rings, put em in the freezer for a while, or just keep them in the fridge. same with the nipples for the bottle, keep em in the fridge and they feel good on the gums!! Good luck!!

I started Justin on cereal after a couple months. When the baby cant go for 2 hours without getting hungry, its time to give her some cereal. You can start her on cups when she can hold them by herself. I would think closer to a year of age. That is just a guess though.. I dont remember when Justin went on them.

For teething, she can chew on crushed ice wrapped in a washcloth, or you can rub rum on her gums. They also have baby ambesol.

Zwieback maybe? They’re made by Nabisco and we used them, too. The teething rings you freeze worked until they sprung a leak. πŸ˜† I also used baby Orajel. I saved the liquor for me. πŸ˜‰ (Some of this is in response to other’s comments).

I agree with the rice cereal as soon as the baby isn’t satisfied with the bottle.

There is lots of good advice from others here, for sure. You’re going to know what works best for your baby. Some of it will def. be trial and error, so don’t stress too much. πŸ˜‰
