Hey Koishi…I’m gonna let my husband Zack type here,he’s a computer genius….so here…
There our two options
1. Get a SATA/USB IDE/USB connector depending on your hard drive and hook it up to another computer to get your pictures off. It is something like this

2. If you have your Vista CD you should be able to reinstall without formating. It has been a while since I did a Vista install but when you get to the drive selection you should be able to select the drive and then click next. Formating should only happen if you click on the format button.

The installer will rename the old windows directory to something else but all your other files should be intact. Then after you get your photos backed up I would go back and reinstall Vista and this time format the drive.
Hope this helps!!August 6, 2008 at 7:21 pm #726995And this is why I never install updates. Ever. Last time I did, my entire computer crashed and I lost everything, including the stuff on the harddrive (I took it in). And my mother’s computer did the same thing, only she didn’t lose everything, just about 400 photos she’d taken over the last 2 months (400 out of probably 15000 she had on there), but all her older stuff (the important stuff) she still had. She was swearing when she told me this, hours after it had happened. I’ve never heard her swear before! 😯
I say listen to the computer guru’s advice (meaning people that aren’t me).
August 6, 2008 at 8:35 pm #726996thank you guys so much! and Dragon Mistress, thank your husband for me! that will save me quite a bit of money!

I never would have thought of these options on my own! thanx again every one!August 6, 2008 at 9:00 pm #726997anytime, I hope it works for u!
August 6, 2008 at 10:57 pm #726998I highly recommend Spinrite…saved mine twice in as many weeks.
We’re gonna get a back up harddrive and back up all the computers with it…so that when the computer crashes, we can just reformat and not have to worry about losing our stuff.

August 6, 2008 at 11:29 pm #726999Spinrite is fantastic.
And my family uses the off-site backup system Carbonite. So far it’s been great. My dad had to restore his computer and it was no problem at all.

The only caveat I would mention with an external hard drive is research before you invest. The LaCies used to have a problem of heating up very fast and literally frying themselves! Very bad if you had a big drive like 120GB! 😯 Some hard drives are advertised as being the best and come with an expensive price tag to back up that claim, and they can end up being the worst!

Our plan is to get the 300GB hard drive,
transfer all of our photos, artwork, music and stories to it, then shut it down and shelve it. So heating up shouldn’t be an issue…it will only be used for storage.Biggest thing we’ve been freaking out about when my computer crashes is the fact that all of our photographs are on it, along with Bill’s stories, my artwork and a lot of music.
So So if we have them backed up and somewhere safe, then we won’t have to worry about losing those files.
