When I was doing home health care, one of the ladies I worked with started raising birds. So I got a pair from her and one of her old cages. My son was Oregon at the time so what was to become his room quickly turned into the bird room. I got afew more pairs and they started multiplying. Then I got an old aviary from the same lady and some went outside. I started with parakeets, added finches and then cockatiels. More aviares were bought and I built three of them my self. I was given canaries and Gouldian finches by a friend that moved out of state and more birds by a few people who had to get rid of theirs. I used to have about 20 cockatiel and 40 finches but somebody stole about half my stock one day when I was at work. I hand fed the babies to sell to pay for the seed. I kinda lost heart after that and my numbers have dwindled. I love having them around. I like to hear all the different noises they make. So that is my bird story! πŸ˜†

Don’t let the thieves discourage you. Sounds like you have the knack for handling birds; not everyone can do that, especially raising babies. πŸ˜‰

Theives??? You should have a guard dog!! πŸ˜€ You said you like the sound, but doesnt it get noisy after a while? Also, an aviary is an outside thing… what about cleaning up after them? Do you have to do that with an aviary or does it not matter? One more… do they require a whole lot of attention? I heard that birds like parrots do, but I cant see a finch demanding a whole lot of attention.

How rotten of somebody to steal your birds! 😑 What is the coldest it get where you live? We discussed outside aviaries, but I think it gets way too cold here and I wouldn’t want to mess with some kind of heating for them. Also, I would miss mine if they were outside. I love hearing them chirp and chatter. Do you have any canaries?

I have dogs but my neighbors son who shares my yard, never shuts a gate so the dogs have their own yard. And yes, you still have to clean up after the birds, just not on a daily basis except for the food and water. The finches don’t need alot of interaction but the cockatiels need alot of attention when you hand feed them to make them social. πŸ˜€

The coldest it gets where I am is down in the twenties. The birds seem to handle it fine as long as they have shelter. I do have to take the ice out of the water dishes every morning when it freezes! I have several aviaries right outside my windows so I can hear them quite well! I love to hear my canaries sing! πŸ˜€

I usually get up around 6:45am. Have my coffee and read the paper. Then take care of the critters πŸ˜€
