Thanks for the offer. I may take him up on it if the idiots running our show can’t get their act together. I’m out of the store today so can’t do much. It seems a simple problem. Not something I’d know how to fix, but surely something second nature to anyone running a web hosting company. The problem is finding a person who has the authority to do anything other than say “that’s not our department”.
June 30, 2009 at 6:55 pm #772121Ah, the tech runaround. I hope they figure out this problem. Why should you have to go to “an entirely different and unrelated hosting company”? Hasn’t ccgs.com always been your host?

ccgs.com has always been our web site, but it’s been hosted by a few different companies over the years. A hosting company is just someone who has the equipment and connections to make the web site work in the way we need it to work, without us having to have a clue how they do this.
The problem is that although “ccgs.com” is our web site, we like to use “astralcastle.com” in advertising and such. Our old hosting company had us set up perfectly so that if you followed a link to “astralcastle.com” that’s the name you always saw in your browser’s address line; if you followed a link to ccgs.com, that was what you saw instead.
I’m sure there are lots of good reasons why this was entirely a bad idea, but it did what we wanted.
The new hosting company (or the new version of the old one; I don’t really know what’s going on) solved the “It’s Broken!” problem by doing some kind of redirect, where if you follow a link to “astralcastle.com” you simply land at ccgs.com. On the face of it, this is a workable answer (in that you can now go to our site and wander around and maybe place an order, without being told “You’re Not Authorized To Do That”), but it’s not the answer we were looking for. Now a new customer follows that astralcastle link, but they end up at some site by the name of “ccgs.com”. Is this a fake site? We all know about those fake eBay links that take you to some site that’s not eBay…
Anyway, that’s where we are right now. Everything is working again, which is the major hurdle, and I’m waiting to see what they say about alternative methods.

Oh. Ha ha. Don’t you just love that optimism? After posting that I tried clicking the link in my signature and we now have a fancy “Under Construction” sign at astralcastle.com.
I’m going to be all hopeful here and figure, as I always do, “Things have to get worse before they can get better.”
Usually I’m using this phrase to explain why the kitchen is flooded when I’m doing a spot of plumbing, but I’m sure it applies here too.
July 2, 2009 at 8:35 pm #772124I just tried and got sent to the cogs.com site but I could navigate around ok. Maybe they got it fixed again?

It’s up and down. Right now it’s up as it was this morning, where any page requests for “astralcastle” are redirected to “ccgs”. Maybe they are trying different things. I’m going to close my eyes and stick my fingers in my ears for a day and see what the world looks like tomorrow.
July 2, 2009 at 10:39 pm #772126I just tried too; it’s loading slowly but it seems to be working. LOL at “stick my fingers in my ears for a day and see what the world looks like tomorrow”!

It looks as though I’m stuck with it being that way. The new server doesn’t seem to be set up like the old one, and things that were possible there are not possible here.
Oh well, that’s life: a neverending series of complications needing to be dealt with.
