So Jennifer, how on Earth did you develop and nurture this amazing gift for painting, art and color you have that makes me squeal…these strange noises of girlish glee I didn’t even know I could make? 😀

Oh goodness, I don’t know! I know this sounds cliche and goofy, but I’ve been making art of one kind or another since I was old enough to know what I was doing. I guess I can tell you my path, would that suffice? 😆

I decided I wanted to be an artist when I was in Middle School (around 7th grade maybe?) and all through High School I was told by teachers and guidance councilors, parents and adults that I could never make a living at doing art. I graduated in 2000 and just to be a rebel (but really more because I wanted to do art) I decided that I was going to be an artist! I didn’t go to college because I was told that for the type of work I was seeking (freelance… I wanted to paint novel covers, hah!) that employers/art directors that hire freelance artists rarely cared or even looked to see if you wen to school– they just wanted to see portfolios. So I saved myself from paying over $100,000 for schooling and went directly out into the working world. I worked really hard and got pretty much no where for over 6 years, and spent most of my time working in minimum wage retail jobs, being miserable. I spent hundreds of dollars of my retail paychecks to send out samples and inquiries for work (postage + high quality color printouts, owch! $$) and was lucky when I got rejection letters… most of the time they wouldn’t even bother to send that! Yikes. I am not trying to dissuade any budding artists out there, because I am all about people going after their dreams! But the truth is that it is usually a lot of hard hard work for little reward. 12 years after I set my goal of ‘professional artist’ I am only now able to bumble though this as a job because of Windstone kindly giving me the freelance work they do. <3 Even now, I still am a long way away from realizing my dream…

Whoa that got rambly!! Anyhow, colors are second nature to me. I goof them up too though, sometimes! But I really like to play with them. I’ve been painting forever… putting paint on Windstones is still a fairly new thing for me in the scheme of things. 🙂 If someone had told me 5 years ago that I’d be more well known for applying colors to someone else’s art than for doing my own work I’m not sure what I would have thought!

Well, actually that’s a silly story. When Melody joined Elfwood (http://melodypena.elfwood.com/) in.. gosh, 2003? 2004? I think… My at the time roommate Amber Hill and I got her number and used to call Melody and chat about art and birds and cockatiels and koi and all sorts of random stuff. Mold growing on old acrylic paint. Stuff like that! Long story short, I talked to John, her husband as you all know 🙂 , and they wanted to fly Amber and I out to meet them and talk about doing a line of prints of our artwork. Well, at the time, I was the only one supporting myself and an ex-boyfriend with my retail work, and I couldn’t get off of work to save my life. They (meaning my retail job) would have fired me, and since I valued having a roof, I wasn’t able to go. A little under a year later Melody had me be a guinea pig and sent me a few things to paint, and then I got asked on to help them test their PYO line (at that time only griffins, this was way before the forum existed) and write a tutorial and help new painters learn how to paint them, since they were a new product. Things evolved from there!
