I was at an art show once where this guy had amazing artwork & I was going to buy a few prints from him until he was a complete jerk to me. Well I woun’t go into what he said or I said back but I walked away without buying anything after it was all over & so did a few other people that where looking at his work. So to answer your question then yea I think it would matter to me. I love buying art from people I know & if I know they are a jerk I don’t buy from them 🙂
August 26, 2007 at 11:08 pm #611597I’ve only gotten to meet a few artists in person and their pleasant personalities and willingness to spend time with a “common person” have made me frequent their “shops” more often at least to browse, if not to purchase something. If they had been rude I might not even browse.
August 26, 2007 at 11:13 pm #611598Absolutely it makes a difference for me (in art, books, even movies/actors). I think the real problem (?) is that most people never meet the artist. You, Nam, probably lose sight of that fact, as you do interact with artists on a regular basis (as do many people on this forum). In fact, asking the forum is asking a very specific subset of the population 🙂 . I’d say the average person really doesn’t meet the artists of what they buy. Even craft fairs here seem to be attended by those really interested in art or are artists themselves, instead of the people just buying art in the mall or wherever they happen to find what they like. I love buying from artists I know & like, but I just don’t know how many people have or take that opportunity. I have a few things that I like and don’t know anything about the artist, but not many.
It would be interesting if you gave a list of a few names of artists (both friendly & not) without mentioning whether or not you liked them personally, and seeing how many of us had anything by them. It wouldn’t really be fair to tell us the end results, but you could see if the non-friendlies were more represented in our homes than the friendlies. Of course you’d have to keep Melody off the list as that would too greatly skew the results! 😆
August 27, 2007 at 12:30 am #611599Art stands for itself. If I like it, I buy it. But then again I know very few artists and all of them are nice! 😛
August 27, 2007 at 9:45 pm #611600I agree with Lam as well. Communication is a keep factor on whether I will buy something from them or not. If they are rude to me or don’t offer a solution to a problem then I will be less likely to buy from them again. Usually I just buy something if I like it. I think knowing the artist and their personality is nice is a bonus for me.
