I am sketching a griffon right now, and I’m having the HARDEST time properly building the front legs. Everything else was easy, but this is killer for me. I refuse to give up on this, so I need advice.
Maybe someone out there has some pointers for me? Those bird claws are doing me in. What’s your trick? Should I look at actual photographs of birdclaws? Or is ‘winging it’ easier?
April 20, 2010 at 5:50 pm #500624April 20, 2010 at 7:27 pm #811617i would definitely reference some hawk or eagle photos for sure. then take some creative license and go from there…
April 20, 2010 at 7:37 pm #811618oh, and you should post some of your artwork! i think i remember you mentioning that you’re a painter…
April 20, 2010 at 7:55 pm #811619To be honest, I don’t post a lot of my stuff here or other places because I am a little self conscious. Here are a couple of the things I do.
I quilt:
I make unique and custom dreamcatchers. I used to do this for comissions, but I haven’t had a customer in almost a year:
I sketch fantasy art, and often. Have for a long, long time. I also enjoy drawing animals, though that started when I became a vet tech:
And I paint, with all different sorts of media. This particular one is just oil pastels. This is the picture that discouraged me so badly about a year ago I stopped painting for a long time. Unfinished, so I apologize. I never did finish it. And it was a comission. I simply refunded the customer her money, and referred her to another artist who did good work. I really lost my groove because of this picture. But now I’m finding it again:
Nothing special, really. π
April 20, 2010 at 9:31 pm #811620what’s wrong with that cute dog? i think its a great start! i wish i could do oil pastels that well! your sketch looks pretty cool from what i can tell… its a bit blurry, but looks great! do you have more pics of the dreamcatchers you do? i actually have been looking for some unusual, nontraditional ones…
April 20, 2010 at 10:21 pm #811621I have some more pictures of that one particular dream catcher, but most of my others I haven’t taken photos of. I’ve got some around the house I could get pictures of though. I once did a dream catcher made of barbed wire for a commission. My arms HATED me for awhile after that. I also do some with horseshoes. But mostly, I like to go out walking and find wood with personality and turn it into a dream catcher. I can do with or without beading, or feathers. The feather on that one is an own feather. That one hangs above my bed. I did another commission of a dreamcatcher in an old wagon wheel. That one was AWESOME. I regret not getting pictures of that one.
And as for the dog, I was sorely dissapointed it almost from the start. I couldn’t tell you why. I guess I felt like it lacked…. I don’t know what the word is I’m looking for here. It lacked vibrancy? Does that make sense? I felt like I was just not in the right place in my life to enjoy my art like I had for the first 25 years of my life. So I gave myself a break for awhile.
April 20, 2010 at 11:35 pm #811622AnonymousOMG Talona………the Shepherd looks freakin’ AWESOME, other than it looks sad to me, but maybe it’s unhappy it was never finished.
You artists, sheesh – that is one beautiful German Shepherd dog I am looking at and you aren’t happy about it ::slaps your face::: oh I am so sorry lol……..
Well now I forgot what else you posted LOL oops Oh yeah, quilt, that is cute with the penguins. Dream catchers, yes non traditional ones are much neater! Who was it that made the awesome Smudge sticks, can’t recall but they were way neat and I wish I could afford some or at least ONE (you only need one right lol)….. That MEAN fantasy sketch is ugly mean I don’t like it (LOL)…..
(runs n hides)
April 20, 2010 at 11:38 pm #811623AnonymousOh I got off topic didn’t I!
I meant to give a pointer, tip.
To draw, you should begin by placing the pencil point tip to the paper or surface that you intend to write upon…………..

What are you, Canadian? We’re supposed to be the ones who apologize after hitting someone on purpose…. π
And I like the German Shepard painting…. it’s a great start, in my opinion. Much better then I could do anyway.
And I like that quilt. It’s cool! π
