I worked for almost three years at a vets, the ones you had to look out for were the little dogs, and unfortunately the Rotts, most were hostile to anyone not their owner. Rotts are kinda funny like that, they are pretty much one family/person dogs.
My two Rotts are not like this at all. They look at everyone as if they were put on this Earth to pet them. Some people may have hostile Rotts, but not all are like this, nor is it a trait stronger in Rotts than any other dog. Sorry, but with all the bad publicity Rotts get, I feel compelled to defend the good ones and not generalize a breed. π Im thinking Tristans owner will feel the same way about the Chow comment.
On another note, I am glad you got your horse to trust you. That is very cool.
Skigod, I know not all Rotts are bad. It’s just mine was mean to the bone, and unlike the Rotts you describe, he didn’t even care for his owners (us) much. He would growl at the vet (even with the muzzle on) when she tried to give him his shots, until she finally shot him up with a tranquilizer to knock him out. She had to give him ten shots before she could approach him, and he still wasn’t knocked out! π― He just didn’t give her any trouble. The only reason she didn’t give him more was because she was worried about ODing him. She gave him enough to knock out a horse! He didn’t actually pass out until he was at home 15 minutes later. It was only after we had him destroyed that our vet admitted to us she was afraid of him. She had written “Caution” on his chart and everything.
Kyrin, as a vet I can only imagine the types of animals you must have seen. Stories for another day. π And I’m so glad you teach your children to never pet a stranger’s dog! That is indeed a good lesson to learn!
Most rotts I’ve met were like big lap dogs. Sweet temperments. (I’ve never been afraid of rotties. Even the aggresive rotties…. I really like the breed, but, I’d never own one. I know that I wouldn’t make a good rottie owner.)
But, saddly I lump chows with the german shepherds. I’m not afraid of them, but, I don’t trust them. They are hard for me to read. If I can’t read a dog then I just don’t trust them. I turned away chows from my grooming buisness just because I’m so nervous around them. I didn’t want the dog to stress just because I was stressing.
But, I’ve only been bitten by cocker spaniels, lhasa’s, shih tzus, maltese….. Except for the spaniels (spazzy, spazzy spaniels…. I used to own cockers, not all of them are spazzy but, it tends to be in the breed…) all of the dogs were small. Well except a golden retriever and a huskey corgie mix…
The vet I used to work for marked the agressive dogs with AAA on the chart so we knew what we were getting into.

May 26, 2008 at 2:12 am #707202Coming into this a bit late, as usual. π
Hey, I think it’s way cool to see a guy with a horse…just wish my husband was a horse person. He loves them, he’ll feed them, help me in the barn, whatever, but has absolutely *NO* desire to ride or drive. He’ll go with me in the carriage–as long as I don’t ask him to take the reins. π
I’m with Hoofer on the some days, yes! Some days What the *^$%$@ was *I* thinking!?!?
Out of the 8 here, 5 are trained to ride and/or drive. The 3 that aren’t are my month and a half old foal, his 2 year old half sister, and his mother, who came to me with some hind fetlock issues. She injured it long before I got her.
I’m hoping to get my chestnut mare into the show ring in harness in the fall. She’s green, but extremely smart, and as long as I have someone a bit more nimble then myself to ride along with me, I hope to get back to driving her out on our trails.
My stallion is semi-retired; he’s a seasoned campaigner in harness and under saddle. We’ve also done Civil War and Revolutionary War re-enactments. His temperament is exemplary; if you don’t look and I don’t volunteer the info, I guarantee you won’t know he’s intact. π
I wish I felt up to riding more…it was one of the reasons why we bought this place. I would ride alone (won’t drive alone, though–definitely NOT safe–)but my husband is not a happy camper when I do. πAs for the breed issues, my mom had a Rottie for a long time. She was very protective of my mom, allowed my dad to live in the same house π and tolerated my brother and me when we came to visit. She was a *very* dominant dog. Mom and I are always alpha–it’s a state of mind that is a full time thing–and quite simply, my dad and my husband are not. π But that was one dog that I did NOT automatically trust, and I wouldn’t try to handle her without my mom around.
We have a Great Pyrenees, and for a breed that is usually quite dominant, Flurry is not a dominant dog. She adores my husband, respects me, and we do just fine. π But I would NOT advise anyone trying to get into this house without my or my husband’s say so. She is one helluva watch dog. Ditto for getting too close to me without permission.
But we see a LOT of Pyrenees come into rescue for dominance issues. Mostly due to improper socialization as pups. They are also known for same sex dog to dog aggression issues. Does this mean that *every* Pyr is dog aggressive? No. No more than *all* blondes are dumb, all Arab horses are crazy….etc. πMay 26, 2008 at 2:19 am #707203nother picture of knightwish with me…hes chewing on my coat in this pic…/sigh the day he starts acting his age instead of like a colt..i will be thrilled lol
May 26, 2008 at 3:06 am #707204Wow, Dracomancer! He’s got some NICE bone to his legs; what is he, and how old is he?
I have one here who is 30 years old–he’s been with me for 26 of those. He doesn’t act his age, either. It’s a wonderful thing! π

May 26, 2008 at 3:23 am #707206As for the kids around dogs, I went to the vet, where kids are NOT ALLOWED, and this lady was letting her 3 year old run up to dogs in the vets office!! She almost got bit be a cocker Spaniel/Poodle mix right in front of me!! I told the lady to get her kid and she mumbles something about not trusting dogs because her son got bit last week. NO WONDER! Control your dang KIDS~!

He IS a big boy! π And at 16, he’s still a baby at heart. π My tallest here is a measly 15.2
I kind of figured he might be a TBX. Do you happen to know his bloodlines? I used to have a Twist bred TB mare. She came from the same lines that produced the famous jumper, Gem Twist. I sold her in foal to my Arab stallion to make room for another purebred Arab mare of similar lines to the stallion. She produced a very nice filly. But, man, did that mare have some mental issues! She was one tough girl to deal with. And could she move? Oooh boy!May 26, 2008 at 3:38 am #707208tasgrs wrote:Dracomancer wrote:hes a 17hh TB warmblood cross and the vet estimates his age to be 16 hes a rescue horse

i am still looking into his bloodlines..once i have them i will be sure to post themMay 26, 2008 at 3:41 am #707209Dracomancer wrote:nother picture of knightwish with me…hes chewing on my coat in this pic…/sigh the day he starts acting his age instead of like a colt..i will be thrilled lol
I would suggest that you don’t allow him to chew on you or your clothing. Dancer was very mouthy as a young horse, it was cute, up to a point, then he would start trying to see how much of “you” he could get into his mouth so he could bite down. He wasn’t being mean, but it still hurt, and when I reacted in pain and jumped, then he’d try to horse bite. You know how they do when they snake their head out with teeth bared.
So I put a stop to that, he is now a very good boy at age 16, and only occassionally wonders if he can get away with nibbling on me. But it’s a bad habit, and I would discourage it, were I you.
As for acting his age, nah, ya want him thinking he’s young as long as possible. π As for behavior in the ring, get out there and ride him everyday before the show. Dancer gets really obnoxious when he feels I am neglecting him. I would imagine Nightwish is no different. If you are visiting him everyday, no wonder he isn’t performing his best in the ring.
And I know your GF doesn’t like horses, weird girl never heard of a girl not liking horses. But she doesn’t have to go with you, and I think being with your horse more would go a long way towards lifting your spirits. So tell the GF and the roommate to go piss up a rope and go ride your horse, everyday. He needs the love and attention as much as you do, and I know for a fact that horses are really good at making us feel loved and appreciated.

heh, if I wasn’t in a relationship already, you’d have competition. Love the hair Dracomancer. My bf had long hair when I first met him (because I told him not to cut it π ), when I went to see him again the next year, he’d shaved it off without telling me -.- needless to say I was a bit upset about that. Guys have beautiful hair <3
