*stumbles in late again*
Eastern VA here (VA Beach area) and I attend Anthrocon.
KEWL! What’s Anthrocon? Is it Sci-Fi related? Hey, does your name have anyhting to do with Tyr from Andromeda? Man, he is fine!
You are not kidding. I got to see him in person at a convention — didn’t get to get a photo though. Darn it. Wow! He’s beautiful!

Definitely a great piece of eye candy! I have been happily married for 15 years, but I sure like to admire God’s creations (and I really like Melody’s creations too)! 😀 As long as I don’t touch, my hubby doesn’t mind. 😀

Anthro in this case is short for Anthropomorphic animals. Furries, in other words. Anthrocon is one of the biggest furrycons.I’ll be there this year!
All right, please forgive me for this, but I just HAVE to ask! 😯 Is this like the “plushies and furries” convention episode of CSI? That is one of my faves! Is there really such stuff that goes on there like “scritching” and “fur piles”? I don’t want to insult or offend, I am just soooo curious!
They sound like a lot of fun, even without the above goings on! 😉
January 13, 2007 at 6:55 am #524872I’m in CA and only a 5 hour drive from the factory. Well 5 hours without commute traffic that is

Maybe next year I can scrounge up enough frequent flyer miles to get all 4 of us to the West Coast. That would be awesome! 😀 😀
January 13, 2007 at 7:24 am #524874I did not get to meet Melody or Chessie though. Chessie was sick and Melody was at home with her. That just means I will have to stop by again some day. Soon I hope

*sighs* They are a lot of fun, for art and dancing and comedy.
As for CSI – Kage (AC’s chairman, Dr. Conway) put it best by saying, “CSI isn’t so much a documentary as evening entertainment.”
Yes, the crew did attend a fur con to obtain some background shots, but the sick stuff… they had to make all that up.
I get razzed at work, too… almost to the point of not *quite* being told I can’t go, because of “possible subversive elements”. Puh-lease. It can be a bit of a sore point with me because of that. *sighs*
Windstone collector in remission. 😉
January 13, 2007 at 1:25 pm #524876Not entirely true, there are websites dediacted to people that do wear costumes for sexual resons, not the norm, but they are out there.

You are right. However, the convention doesn’t have rooms set aside for those acts, nor does it condone that kind of behavior in public. AC is very proud to be a family-friendly convention.
What happens in private rooms, or on people’s private websites (whether or not they attend AC) is their business.
*chuckles* The only “fur pile” I saw was when a large group of costumed fursuiters lay down side-by-side in the hotel lobby to create a living carpet. It was pretty impressive. :-)[/i]

January 13, 2007 at 5:30 pm #524878*laughs* Guess I need to pull out this link again.
Here’s the shocking truth about furpiles!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1YpYswGtg5s (Totally work safe, unless you work somewhere where viewing mascot costumes isn’t allowed.)
Anyhow, what Tyr said. There are always a few freaks, (and plenty of horny teenages, ’cause, you know, teenagers…) and I hear stories about what goes on in some of the rooms, but no, furry conventions aren’t like that.
January 14, 2007 at 12:19 am #524879What a relief that they (the conventions) are not like the CSI ep! Maybe I can take the family to one then. How do I go about getting a costume made? I am totally fumble-fingered, so I won’t even attempt it, but I would LOVE a dragon or horse one if possible.
What goes on there? Do some people show up just to look without wearing costumes? I’m sure there are contests too, huh? It sure sound like a lot of fun….lots of warm fuzzies! 😀

They’re mostly family friendly. The convention itself is 100%, but some of the convention-goers may not be, if you know what I mean.
As for getting a costume, I make them for a living, and there are dozens of other furry-focused costume makers, and hundreds of generic mascot suit makers out there. Plenty to chose from.
But you don’t need a costume to go. Out of 2,000 or so people that attend a major con like Anthrocon, only a few hundred at most will be in fursuits, and even those guys don’t wear them all the time. (They’re hot and sweaty! Which is what makes me laugh at the idea of sexual situations involving them. You’re dying of heat just standing still. Strenous activity in one will just about kill you.)
Anyhow, I love going to furcons, they’re tons of fun, and just people watching (which is what I do, as I sit at a booth all day an see everybody go by,) is really intertaining there.
January 14, 2007 at 1:45 am #524881Hey SPark! I just took a look at your website, and I am veeeeery impressed!!!! 😮 Wow, what great stuff! I would love to see your inventory and current projects; that would be fascinating!
Anyway, where are these fur cons taking place and when? If I can’t go this year since I have so many commitments already, maybe next year. Are they at the same place every year, or do they change? I hope to get to one sometime.
Thanks for the info, I really enjoyed getting educated on the real goings on there. I would love a partial suit since I would probably melt in a full suit! **pant pant** Maybe someday…
I wish you the best with your furries! 😀 Have fun!
Blessings,
Goldragon2!
January 14, 2007 at 2:08 am #524882Most of them are in the same place every year. There’s a good list here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Furry_convention Just scroll down a bit.
I go to FurtherConfusion every year now, and I hope to add Anthrocon to that this year. *crosses fingers*
January 14, 2007 at 2:29 am #524883WOW! Pretty sure I can go at least one day; I am only 2 hours from Pittsburgh, so I don’t think I will need a hotel room. **so excited!** 😀
So who else may go?
