***Recycled Thread***
I was wonderin if anyone uses or have used these brands of acrylics? They’re the craft paints, ’cause until I know if I’m any good at painting PYO’s I don’t want to invest a ton in artist grade paints, but I still want a paint I don’t have to worry about if I sell or trade what gets painted with these.
Brands are:
*Folkart (I’m hoping this is a good one since they have metallic paint in the colors I want to use)
*Americana
*Anitas
*Dazzling Metallics
*Decoart – Elegant FinishI’ve worked with some of these paints on other projects but don’t know how they do for this kind of thing?
and has anyone tried the Precious Metals Premium Leafing?
I was also wondering what a good glue for eyes/gems is that can be found at Hobby Lobby or Michaels? or one I can get inexpensively on Amazon or something?

February 11, 2012 at 9:34 pm #873314For the glue on eyes and gems, seriously, go with the good ol’ white glue. No fancy thing needed.
For the paints, I use primarily Folkart and DeltaCeramcoat. I go with Americana if the other 2 brands don’t have the color I want, but I find Americana to be, well, not thin per se, but more transluscent. Ceramcoat is by far the most opaque, that’s why I like them.
The Folkart metallics are awesome 🙂

http://www.sarahjestin.com/feedbacklists.htmFebruary 11, 2012 at 9:39 pm #873315Folk art – yes! Thats a good brand 🙂 I use them a lot in addition to (as in, I often mix them with) my normal acrylics.
I belive Koishii and Grayfire artz use Folk Art a lot as well 🙂
As for the glue, I prefer Aleene’s Clear Gel Tacky Glue – it’s clear so if you get a tiny bit out of bounds with the glue you won’t be able to see it – it dries nice and flat as well. I bought a 4oz bottle of the stuff in October of 2010, and I still have about 3.5 oz left in my bottle – and I’ve done repairs with the stuff too so I know it holds pretty well 🙂 It’s inexpensive and you can get it at Michael’s.

Though my main paint I use on PYOs are Liquitex Heavy body paint, I also use Apple Barrel, Folk Art, and some type of fabric paint that I can’t remember the name of off the top of my head. And a number of paints meant for cars as well. Generally, if the paint is acrylic, it will be fine on the pyos. Watercolor works on pyos as well… though it’s not smooth in application (but I’ve used it on a number of pyos).
I have a single Americana paint. It was way too chalky for my tastes… but perhaps that was just the specific color. Seems this paint is a popular choice.I use Elmer’s glue for the eyes/gems.
edit: I’ve also used pastels for pyos. From start to finish or just for colors here and there. They are a lot of fun to use, but take a lot of time.
February 11, 2012 at 10:06 pm #873325Lol i have used all those brands on my pyo’s. My favorite though is Folkart. 🙂
