Couldn’t find our old thread on this so thought I’d start off a new one… Last night we watched a dvd called “Gifted Hands: The Ben Carson Story” and it was excellent to say the least. It’s the story of a young African American boy raised in poverty by his mother who had married a much older man when she was 13 years old and how she kept encouraging her sons that they could do anything they wanted in this world and do it better than anyone else. Ben eventually became head of Pediatric Neurosurgy at Johns Hopkins, pioneering many new surgical techniques that are now standard practice in todays medicine. He performed the first sucsessful seperation of conjoined twins joined at the cranium where both babies not only survived but had no brain damage or deficits of any kind. If you want a film that will give you a real pick me up then this is a great one. Dr. Carson is played by Cuba Gooding, Jr. and gives a magnificent performance with gentleness, compassion and sensitivity; not his usual comedic role. Excellent, excellent film.
